The Dred Scott decision was one of the most controversial Supreme Court cases ever. The ruling of the case stated that enslaved people were not citizens of the US and were not given any protection from the US courts or government. Furthermore, the decision made it so that congress could not ban slavery from a federal territory. The Dred Scott decision socially impacted the US as it widened the gap between the North and South.
