The other idea I have is to analyze motifs of poverty in the album "The Melodic Blue," Baby Keem's first studio album. I don't know if I would to pick a specific music video (e.g. the still from the song Family Ties above, in which Baby Keem juxtaposes extreme wealth with extreme poverty, layering image over image of typical scenes from the hood - corner stores, parking lot drug deals, gang fights - under scenes of ostentacious wealth, e.g. ballet dancers in sculpture gardens). I could also anaylze how the album cover depicts Keem's rise out of poverty and what this conveys about gaining sudden material success, especially in relation to processing trauma related to life in the projects.

The album cover for The Melodic Blue can be found here: https://cdn.themedizine.com/2021/09/baby-keem-the-melodic-blue-scaled-e1631295898985-2048x1059.jpg

I would like to analyze the content, character configuration and cinematography of the movie The Platform, directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, for my paper. I plan to analyze the placement of characters, each representative of certain human traits or social ideologies (e.g. greed, altruism, idealism, communism) into the obscure setting of a vertical shaft, where each level correlates with a specific social position with highly limited upward mobility.

Even though poverty is not the sole focus of the film and the incorporated critiques tackle problems in a more general sense (instead of focusing on a particular location), I still think that it would be relevant for the contents and aims of this course. What I imagine to be challenging about this idea is the relative novelty of the movie, resulting in a lack of literature.

I would be happy to hear your thoughts about this idea, if you want to share them with me :)

I see myself as a big Ken Loach fan and his social realism in movies is in my opinion exceptional.
I would like to analyze the movie Sorry We Missed You that in its core criticizes the gig economy that is blooming at the time. not only in Europe but also in America (so this would be my connection with the USA since Loach is English).

It is interesting also from a sensory point of view. Very little music, interesting and "lonely" scenes.
Of course, I would like to do an analysis of poverty representation in the plot - people who work and are still unable to live a decent life, and visual analysis.

Dora Lenart

The project, which consists of interviewing America's poorest people (from homeless people, mentally ill, prostitutes, to drug addicts), combines different visual features that could be interesting to analyze. More specifically I'm fascinated by the use of black and white photography (portraits and full body), which the author uses as a tool to get a deeper insight into the psychology of the different characters.
