Bilibin's illustrations often feature scenes from Russian fairy tales, and so his subjects are usually people, often in outdoors settings, and animals such as wolves, birds and horses that feature in the stories. He shows his knowledge of traditional Russian clothing through his designs for each of the characters, linking the important cultural background behind the tales. He was influential in the revival of Russian folk art at the time, even sponsored by Princess Maria Tenisheva, helping to preserve this cultural heritage. Bilibin's illustrations are almost intrinsically linked with the stories he illustrated for, searching for most of these tales will show them in the first few results; they have become iconic depictions of these fairy tales. Bilibin was also a member of the Mir iskusstva ('world of art') movement and associated magazine, which kept him in touch with contemporaries across Europe, and was where he also developed his interest in Russian folk arts, introducing it to his colleagues.
Stylistically his work tends towards realism, but has a more graphical feel with simplified lines and flatter, brighter colour with little shading or blending. His scenes tend to be 'realistic' too, though depicting fantastical elements from the tales such as the witch Baba Yaga flying on her pestle and mortar, but not adhering strictly to realistic scenes as shown in his 'Fairytale of the Tsar Sultan' illustration with the city in the background, or the blocked out rays of light in one of his firebird illustrations.
These aspects of his style are quite consistent with the movement he took much inspiration from while studying, Art Nouveau - which was flourishing between 1890-1910 when Bilibin was active and mixing with his contemporaries throughout Europe during his studies. The very ornamental nature of Art Nouveau is seen in his work, particularly in his more elaborate forest backgrounds and decorative patterns.

Another influence of Bilibin's, and the Art Nouveau movement as a whole, was the very linear patterns of Japanese woodblock ukiyo-e prints. 'Japonisme', a term coined by French art critic Philippe Burty, describes the popularity and great influence that Japanese art had on Europe at the time, inspiring flattening of style, bold shapes, bright colours in simplified schemes, and an emphasis on nature. Bilibin being well connected to the contemporary art world in Europe was also influenced by this.
Bilibin mostly worked in lithography (for reproduction in books), pencil, watercolour, ink and gouache, using these with detailed brushwork to achieve realistic and complex illustrations. He often lined areas with a very thin brush in a darker colour in a way that is again reminiscent of ukiyo-e prints.
Lubok printing was another print style that influenced Bilibin, a traditional form of printing in Russia usually depicting simple imagery and narratives from literature and religious stories. The graphical shapes often included in his borders often resemble those from lubok prints, and traditional Russian cross stitch.

ARTIST COMPARISON - ALPHONSE MUCHA

Alphonse Mucha (Czech, b.1860, d,1939) was another artist that was very influential from the Art Nouveau movement, arguably its best known artist. He was best known for his highly decorative illustrations, many made for posters or advertisement, and later his 'Slav Epic' series of 20 large paintings (not in Art Nouveau style) depicting important moments of Slavic history.
Bilbin's and Mucha's Art Nouveau works are in some ways similar, featuring organic lines, flat graphical colour, realistically styled people, natural/floral elements and decorated borders. Mucha's illustrations do tend to be more theatrical and elaborate, depicting women clothed in beautiful dresses with flowing hair, and surrounded by rich patterns and flowers, not depicting a narrative as Bilibin's illustrations did - their purpose was different, Bilibin to tell stories and Mucha to draw the eye to bold posters, often for advertising. Mucha's colour palette tended to be a lot of white and saturated colours that are very feminine, complementing his subjects, while Bilibin on the other hand generally used a more toned down and natural palette with greens, browns, reds and so on.
Whilst the 'Slav Epic' series by Mucha is not stylistically similar to Bilibin's illustrations, they both derive their main inspiration from Slavic history and culture.

- I particularly like the borders featured around his illustrations. They give a very unique finish, framing the piece like a snapshot or still frame of a scene that is playing out, placing the viewer outside the image looking in as if through a window which emphasises the fantastical and otherworldly nature of the fairy tales. The patterns and imagery depicted in the borders can also relate and add to the story being told, and I like how they are inspired by different cultural techniques and patterns which adds a more traditional visual style to the traditional tale, balancing out the more modern Art Nouveau style. Since they're like repeating sections of pattern, I wonder if I could incorporate them into prints, perhaps with small sections of lino cuts that could be reused over and over, ordered in different ways.
- I also like how his works are laid out, containing a clear foreground and background that the characters move through - for example, they may be partially obscured by branches in the forest, helping to place them within the scene. He also has a clear focal point that he establishes through use of contrasting colours and creating a more detailed background so that say a less detailed character would then stand out.

- The title illustration of 'Vasilisa the Beautiful' is one work I particularly like - the silhouette of Baba Yaga flying across the darkening sky (reminding me a bit of Jan Pienkowski's silhouetted illustrations) gives a hint of the narrative, feeling slightly intimidating, and sets up that she is an evil figure within the story without introducing her fully - keeping a bit of an air of mystery that is very fitting for a title illustration. The bordering crows are a pattern seen in other works by Bilibin, and add a bit of meaning with their association with death and as a bad omen. I particularly like the incorporation of the Alkonost character, I would think to balance the gloomy imagery above it with some symbolism of youth, joy and beauty, bringing us back to the character of Vasilisa - they are both after all placed directly next to her name in the title.

- Though I think he often uses colour effectively, especially different hues of green and brown for forests, I don't always like his overall colour palette choices. For example, though I really like the composition of the second version of his 'Ivan Tsarevich and the Firebird' illustration (which is why I chose it to do some studies of parts of, along with that it's bit more simple), being more clearly laid out, and longer vertically so the bird has room to spread out and flourish comparative to the first version that looks a little squashed in, that first one has a better colour choice in my opinion - the yellows and pale purple next to a mid tone green look washed out and too flat, where the red and darker greens of the first one are very natural and have more depth. I also don't particularly like the border colour on 'Red Rider', dull beige-brown that I feel doesn't compliment the main illustration, or the too saturated blue and green background of the 'Fairytale of the Tsar Saltan' illustration that looks a bit cartoonish next to the detail of the mostly red foreground. Despite the less saturated colours in ‘Baba Yaga,' this I feel just adds to the moody and slightly scary feel of the piece, fitting for the character of the witch.

Ryan is best known for his papercuts, which mix text, pattern and silhouette in each piece.

One of the most unique aspects of Ryan's work in my opinion is how he incorporates text, sometimes single sentences, sometimes many paragraphs in a way that is complemented thematically by the illustration and pattern. This text may be large and easy to read, while other times it might be very small so that the viewer has to search for it within the piece. I think both ways are quite effective for different purposes - it can either be punchy and immediate, or prompt closer examination of all of the tiny details.

Often Ryan uses themes of love, connectivity, and emotion.
The text addresses more abstract concepts in quite a philosophical way, with a sometimes wistful but optimistic tone commenting on relationships, life, and the world around us. It can be slightly rambling, reading like a train of thought with questions and unclear answers. In a way, he also criticises society today, where people may not stop to think about the bigger picture, or don't have time to do that or spend with their loved ones as much as they would like due to pressure to keep working and not take time away for these things.

There are several motifs that are common within Ryan's work, particularly nature (trees, flowers, leaves etc), birds, stars and couples. The style and imagery contained within Ryan's work gives it a very whimsical, calm feeling, which goes well with the positive messages often contained in the text.

The vignette borders of in Ryan's papercuts serve multiple purposes, being a unifying characteristic across his work that makes it even more recognisable as his (generally a simple scalloped edge with small heart cut outs), complimenting the motifs of the rest of the piece (for example a floral or starry border), and giving structural stability that holds all the delicate bits of paper together without need for a mount.
Absence of a border can also emphasise the fragility of the medium, and is often seen in Ryan's pieces that have lots of little interwoven strands of flowers and plants, giving me the impression of growth unconstrained by a frame.

Colour isn't a big focus of Ryan's work - most of his papercut pieces are monochromatic, and different works with the same text and theme may have a different colour, so I don't feel the colour is particularly central to each piece. He generally uses a singular saturated or dark colour that contrasts well with a white background to make details clear and easy to see.
A few of his works do use tone very carefully, usually to show the night sky - the many tiny cut out stars create the same kind of illusion of grey from the black or dark blue on white that cross hatching with pen would. These works of his are ones I especially like, they remind me of the real night sky that isn't one blank plane but has small variations or sections of clouds that give it depth.

Ryan also produces screen printed works in the same style as his papercuts, showing that style is not restricted to one medium or technique and can be adapted to many ways of working. In fact, though papercuts are his best known work now he describes how he began with screen printing and the process of trying to simplify his work with paper stencils lead him to develop his current methods.

She is compared to her stepmother and stepsisters, who become ugly as they are jealous and spiteful, while Vasilisa's positive traits are what make her beautiful.
Asking for help - When she encounters a situation that is impossible for her to handle on her own, Vasilisa asks the doll for help. However, she still intends to do some of the chores herself - showing that it's important to work hard, but be humble enough to ask for help when you need to.
Light triumphs over dark - at the end of the story, the light from the magical skull burns Vasilisa's stepmother and stepsisters. This light that they sent her to fetch with ill intent ends up backfiring on them and causing their own demise. Light wins in the end, in both the literal and metaphorical sense.

The Buried Moon is an English fairy tale included by Joseph Jacobs in his 1893 book 'More English Fairy Tales', originally told by Marie Balfour from Lincolnshire as a local story. It is set in the marshland of Northern England, and is about a girl who is the personification of the moon and how her light keeps away the dangerous creatures in the dark bogs, until one day helping a villager she becomes stuck in the bog. She is then rescued by the villagers who cannot safely navigate the bog without her light.
The history of the tale is unclear but it may come from forms of moon worship.

The story features many fairy tale elements such as the magical main character, traditional superstitions and evil fantasy creatures in the night. It is untraditional in the way that the moon is not a hero on a quest, but simply helping a man get home safely, and is in turn rescued by the villagers who are grateful to her. She is shown to be kind and brave to sacrifice her freedom to help someone, and is so a character with good morals.
The moon is not an 'unlikely hero', and doesn't fit into the roles of a princess, or a peasant girl, or a witch, but is wholly her own character. She also returns to her place at the end of the story and doesn't really interact with any of the other characters, certainly not getting married which is a common trope.
The moon as a personified character is a unique choice, and her role reflects the reassurance we get from moonlight at night.

Walker's shoots that produce a series of photographs are some of my favourites, because it feels like you can almost piece together a narrative, but it's never one that makes much logical sense, leaving me confused but in a good way.
For example, his 2019 W magazine shoot is loosely egg themed - featuring large rubbery costumes with huge egg shapes, superimposed images of eggs, and eggs smashed on the floor with a badminton net and racket-wielding models (suggesting narrative within this one image that they played badminton with those eggs). This all serves to paint a picture of a very odd egg themed world. These photos somehow make both more and less sense to me when seen together - I first saw the egg costumes photo, but it only clicked that those white 'balloons' were eggs once seeing the rest of the images, which answered one question but created many many others.
Within this series a distorting wide-angle lens adds even more roundness to some of the pictures, creating a consistency of shape - eggs are round, yolks are round, the costumes & clothing are round, so why not make the images a bit round too.
The double exposure editing with giant cracked eggs also creates a surreal contrast to the much smaller models.

Hannah Dyson is an English painter and illustrator. She studied illustration at Brighton University and the Royal College of Art. Dyson works both digitally and with papercut collage.
A frequent subject of Dyson's work is the landscapes of Stroud, Gloucestershire where she lives. She takes inspiration from her love of the natural world and combines it with the magical fantasy of fairy tales - while walking in the countryside she imagines that you could meet any kind of creatures like fairies or trolls, and this is the focus of her illustration.

Dyson produces much of her work digitally, with large drybrush-esque textures swept across the landscape to give the illusion of texture and detail in
This technique is adapted from Dyson's collage work, where she paints similar textures onto paper and cuts them into shapes that are then recombined to form the illustration. Dyson most often uses this to create animals where the natural edges of the paper help to break up the image into pieces like chunks of fur, or ridged scales, adding a subtle depth to the collage that gives the pieces the kind of 3D presence that these shapes would have in real life.
Another thing I particularly like about these collages is that there is a huge amount of variety in the texture from a few very simple techniques. Dyson allows the brush bristles to be the star of the show, layering them in various colours and amount of paint. This is the first layer of texture. The cut edges are then a mix of smooth and choppy, building up the texture in a different dimension.
In my opinion, the simplicity and uniformity in terms of how the paper is painted onto allows the collage to come together so well at the end, balancing complexity so that it doesn't become too cluttered. I think if she were to incorporate many different methods of painting the paper into these pieces, the number of pieces would have to be less to maintain that balance, and so losing some of that depth that the layering provides.

This is a Victorian inspired paper toy theatre designed by Dyson. I particularly like the strong colour palette of blue, yellow, dark red and white, which helps to bring uniformity to the characters and really make them fit within the scene.
This is something I could try if I construct a scene of my own, linking the characters through not only style but colour.

The fairy tale stories and creatures Dyson explores have a very distinctly western European, particularly British feel to them. I think they come across this way because of how much influence she takes from her own local area, the nature has a strong British
She draws from British folklore, illustrating creatures like fairies, giants and witches. Many British fairy tale creatures are strongly associated with nature.
Dyson has also produced several illustrations of more obscure local myths accompanied by text, intended to get people interested in some lesser known tales.
When drawing any creature from stories like fairy tales where there is no one true 'correct' design, the artist has to design their take on it. Dyson's designs have a generally fun, quite cute aesthetic which suits her style and approach to the stories as something to be enjoyed, as opposed to some takes which might have a darker interpretation. While I wouldn't say her designs are particularly innovative, they are definitely effective in conveying both mood and story.

For her digital illustrations, I personally prefer Dyson's landscapes to her character focused pieces. Digital illustration allows a strong control of the colour palette, which is my favourite part of her landscapes - they tend to be done in very calming, harmonious greens, browns, yellows and whites which
They're also deceptively simple - again, she uses broad brush stroke textures to suggest detail and texture rather than rendering it all in. I really enjoy how she hides little details in them too, such as the creature in the woods in 'Sunset in Field', which I didn't notice at first. It made me go back and look at some of her other pieces more closely, and while not all of them have things to notice hidden in them, I did always find some little unique bit of foliage or a particularly nice branch, which goes to show how effectively she pieces the composition together that more can be found in fairly simple works. It reminds me of going out for a walk and taking the time to notice small details like that in person, which is always a great way to appreciate nature more.

Most of Pienkowski's illustrations consist of two parts, a colourful and rich background with an intricate black (plus some small coloured details) silhouette on top, which features the story being told - characters, monsters, buildings and so on. The amount of detail that Pienkowski includes in these silhouettes means that the story can be told very clearly - they're easy to identify,
It also means there's an element of curiosity, the reader can think about and come up with things like colours or patterns of clothing on their own, giving them freedom rather than restricting their imagination as they read, something which is a key aspect of fairy tales.

To make his silhouettes, Pienkowski has used both paper cuts covered in black printing ink, and digital processes. He has said in interviews that he was brought up with paper cuts in Poland, which served as inspiration for him, and later use of computer techniques allowed him to make much more detailed illustrations.

The primary technique used by Pienkowski for his backgrounds is marbling with inks, where ink is poured and suspended on the surface of thickened liquid and paper is swiped over it to pick up the ink.
This method allows Pienkowski to achieve very vibrant colours and lots of variation of shape and texture, which I think well complements his simplistic black silhouettes, each making the other 'pop'. The bright swirls of colour also give a very magical effect which suits fairy tales well.

Aside from his larger illustrations, Pienkowski produces smaller images, often only silhouettes without background, to go inside the book.
I like this approach of taking his character silhouettes and making them simplified to fit directly alongside the story where a larger more complex image would be out of place.
One of his illustrations from Hansel and Gretel also has its own vignette, which spreads across the page as if the silhouettes are reaching out.
The layered laser-cut scene depicting the ending of 'the Nutcracker' also has a very decorative vignette that is the same as the one on the page opposite apart from the snowflakes that spill out from the illustration, making it stand out. The silhouette itself here is also in white, which gives a very different feeling that is more positive and happy compared to the black silhouettes which can be intimidating and scary like a shadow cast onto a wall. It also matches the setting of the scene in winter.

I also particularly like some of the ink techniques Pienkowski uses in his other books. For example, the layers of thinned ink in this illustration for 'A Necklace of Raindrops' builds up bright greens and gives the impression of lots of thick foliage. The splatters across the sky and water also give subtle detail and texture the paper to make it less plain, which I enjoy.

In his mini pop up books, like 'Dinner Time', Pienkowski uses gradients of washed out ink layered with splotches that are blown with air while still wet, causing the ink to flow outwards in a burst, to create the textures of fur and feathers.

I would like to explore these ink techniques and try incorporating them into my own work.

East of the Sun and West of the Moon is a Norwegian fairy tale collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe.

In this story the youngest daughter of a poor man marries a white bear in return for her family becoming rich. The girl is taken to a magical castle where she lives alone by day and is joined at night by the bear, who takes a human form though she never sees him. She becomes lonely and despite the bear's warning, speaks to her mother who tells her to light a candle at night to see his face. She does so but spills melted tallow on him and wakes him; he reveals he has been cursed by his stepmother and was almost free, but now he must go back to the castle east of the Sun and west of the Moon, to marry a troll princess.
The prince leaves, but the girl wishes to marry him and follows, though she must first find the castle east of the Sun and west of the Moon. She meets three old women along the way, from whom she receives an enchanted golden object each, then the East, West and South Winds, the last of whom takes her to their brother the North Wind. The North Wind is just strong enough to take her to the castle, where she speaks to the troll princess through the window, giving a golden item each night in exchange for seeing the prince. The troll princess drugs the prince each night however so they are unable to speak, until the third night when some trapped humans in the next room warn him. They agree on a trial only the girl can achieve - washing the tallow from his shirt. The troll princess tries and is unsuccessful, so the girl tries and is able to. The trolls are so enraged they explode, leaving the prince and the girl to marry and live in the castle east of the Sun and west of the Moon in peace.

Characters turning into animals as part of a curse is a common feature in many fairy tales, as is requiring some kind of maiden to break the curse. I like that in this story they are not married as part of the bargain, and the girl takes it upon herself to go and find the prince once she discovers the truth, giving her more agency and building her character. She also always replies 'no' when asked if she's scared when riding on the bear/winds. I also enjoyed the trip itself, it's both quite funny that nobody seems to have any more information than the last and builds up the mystique of the castle she's trying to get to.
The trolls and humans (called 'Christians' in the story) being at odds are a common feature in Norwegian tales also, trolls being a key creature in their folklore and fairy tales.
I particularly like the idea of this castle being 'east of the Sun and west of the Moon', and being nearly impossible to get to. It paints it as a very magical and mysterious place, and while reading I was always imagining what it could be like in a place like that.

However I don't think the girl has as much presence here as she could, she somewhat blends into the background, though I do like her pose, it makes her seem relaxed and inquisitive.

source:
http://hildekramerenglish.blogspot.com/2010/07/east-of-sun-west-of-moon.html

A defining feature of Bawden's work is his strong use of line, particularly in his prints - detail is provided by many thin stripes and curves, while bolder thicker lines build up larger shapes. They stand out as very modern, and appealed to his commercial clients. Bawden's prints of buildings, such as 'Brighton Pier' and 'Audley End House', are very architectural and structured, showcasing the unique features of the buildings well. These two prints and many others also showcase how he used colour as an important compositional element to break up the print into sections.

I particularly enjoy his prints for how they utilise the medium, he makes careful decisions to leave large areas blocked in with black or conversely to carve away until there are only thin lines left. The graphical feel that they have is very striking and eye catching.
Relief prints are able to produce very solid sections of bold colour (or pure black), and overlap these sections to build upon an image. In Bawden's 'Hare and the Tortoise' for example bits of green show through from underneath all of the animals, tying the print as a whole together.

Some of Bawden's most famous prints are a series of illustrations of tales from Aesop's fables. Fables and fairy tales are strongly associated, and the specific definitions are not set in stone. Fables tend to, but not always, depict animals, and give a moral lesson at the end whereas a fairy tale may be more focused on entertainment. Both have close cultural ties, and may have been passed down through generations and changed over time.
Aesop's Fables are a collection of fables attributed to the slave and storyteller Aesop who is believed to have lived in Ancient Greece. They have certainly changed over time as they have been written and re-recorded. They are mostly short tales where the main characters are animals given human traits and used to tell some kind of social or religious moral message.
This kind of personification of animals is also present in fairy tales, where animals may be able to talk with no explanation why given in the story, the reader is just expected to understand - a by-product of talking animals being ingrained into many many generations of stories through things like fables that we read from a young age.

Bawden's depictions of the animals from these fables are uniquely styled. Compared to other illustrations that feature realistic animals in naturalistic backgrounds, Bawden's prints are comparatively simple, but very effective, being highly stylised. They also feature a lot of repeating elements. Bawden would have, for example, one kind of arrangement of shapes to make up a tortoise's shell and then every tortoise would be have that same pattern. His consistency of style and the manner in which he breaks down the shapes within the animal (somewhat reminding me of abstract painters such as Picasso's break down of a human face) I think are key to how successful his prints are.
