Unconditional Love

Quote: “'I swear, honey, there are times when I think you’re the only one around who still has faith in me,'” Dad said. “I don’t know what I’d do if you ever lost it.” I told him that I would never lose faith in him. And I promised myself I never would."

Explanation: I chose this quote because it depicts the bond that Jeanette and her father have. Regardless of the fact that he has not always been the best father, Jeanette says that she will never give up of him. This proves that her love for him is unconditional. I chose this picture of a man on top of a mountain because he had to not give up his hike to get there. This is similar ti Jeanette's relationship to her father because she has to keep supporting him even through rough spots, but at the and of the day she loves him no matter what.
Picture:

Quote: "'Don't worry, God understands.' Mom said. 'He knows that your father is a cross we must bear.'"

Explanation: I chose this quote because it shows how despite how bad her husband may be, Jeanette's mother still believes that her children will have good lives. By telling that God understands she is reassuring them that they do not have to live in their father's shadow. I chose this picture because the quote talks about how God knows that their father is a cross the whole family must bear. This means that the family have to support him even if he weighs them down.
Picture:

Quote: "I never believed in Santa Clause. None of us kids did. Mom and dad refused to let us. The couldn't afford expensive presents and they didn't want us to think we weren't as good as other kids."

Explanation: I chose this quote because it shows how Jeanette's parents refused to be what society views as normal. This example with Santa Clause just goes to show how not even the oldest of traditions could make them conform. I chose this picture because it shows three of the oldest tales in parenting that Jeanette's parents did not believe in.
Picture:

Quote:"That was the thing about the hospital. You never had to worry about running out of stuff like food or ice or even chewing gum. I would have been happy staying in that hospital forever."

Explanation: I chose this quote because it tells the reader just how hectic Jeanette's home life is. Normally children would hate the hospital and having to be in alone, but Jeanette actually enjoys it because of the structure it provides her. I chose this picture because I believe the messy pile of rope represents Jeanette's home life, while the organized one is the hospital. This image helps depict the contrast between the two.
Picture:

Quote: "Dad kept telling me that he loved me, that he never would have let me drown, but you can’t cling to the side your whole life, that one lesson every parent needs to teach a child is “'If you don’t want to sink, you better figure out how to swim.'"

Explanation: I chose this quote because it explains how Jeanette's father raised his children to be. He wanted them to be able to do everything on their own. I chose this picture because it shows how much one can stand out when they are their own person. This is how Jeanette's family believes they must look.
Picture:

Fantasy vs. Reality

Quote: "When Dad wasn’t telling us about all the amazing things he had already done, he was telling us about the wondrous things he was going to do. Like build the Glass Castle. All of Dad’s engineering skills and mathematical genius were coming together in one special project: a great big house he was going to build for us in the desert."

Explanation: I chose this quote because it show how Jeanette's father was a dreamer and liked to tell his children of all of his goals, no matter how unreachable they truly were. I also liked how the quote mentions all of her fathers strengths like engineering and mathematics because those are reality which he uses to support his fantasy. I chose this picture because it is of blue prints like the ones Jeanette's father kept of his glass castle that he had planned to build. This further supports the theme by showing how her father hoped to make his fantasy a reality
Picture:
