In the Southwest and Central regions, the tribes' livelihoods were based off of hunting and gathering. This led to nomadic groups forming to follow and hunt animals like bison. On the other hand, the East coast and Pacific Northwest Indians were based around agriculture and fishing. Since they could use the land year after year, they had no need to move from place to place.

When the Spanish conquistadors began to explore the Americas they introduced much disease to the American Indians. These diseases including: smallpox, measles, tuberculosis, and other plagues decimated the native population.
In 1518 when Hernando Cortez led 600 men through Mexico, he was met with heavy resistance from the Aztec people. In their time trying to colonize the area his army released smallpox upon the natives. Entirely destroying their resistance. The small pox epidemic released on the natives in turn made it possible for the Spanish to successfully inhabit the area. Similarly, in the Mayan areas of Mexico over 95% of the population died only a few years after first contact with the Spanish.

The first Spanish colonists brought by Columbus on his second voyage, tried to enslave the Indians on the islands of the Caribbeans to find gold. This had little success. In 1518 a Military expedition of 600 men was led by Hernando Cortez into Mexico. The Aztecs fought back but Hernando and his army accidentally exposed the native Aztecs to small pox. This lead to the Spanish's victory and the decimation of the Aztec population.

Many native societies remained in the same locations, however, the Europeans took control of their villages which gradually led to the demise of most natives. Many natives shifted from a nomadic to agriculture lifestyle due to the introduction of valuable crops such as sugar cane which required strenuous labor. This alteration to agriculture brought a halt to the movement of many natives.
