Our first-class in Week 1, 10 March, UNGS 1201 SECTION 12 starts with a bang!. Our beloved Dr. Hamzah being such a great professor by feeding us a lot of interesting knowledge regarding our course, sustainable development. First of all, we learned about system thinking, about how we can analyze and understand ecosystems, cars, and human bodies as well as organizations. As my dream is to become a psychologist, I found this as a very helpful tool as I can apply it in my dream career to understand my client even better about complex human factors challenges associated with the change of human behavior. Next, social issues in Malaysia. High rate of unemployment among graduates is the most top-rated social issues in Malaysia. The previous research has discovered that fresh graduates are lack of employability skills, poor understanding of the English language and communication skill and also there are too choosy about the job. Third, Dr. Hamzah taught us about the basic concept of sustainability and SDGs. I believe that the importance of applying basic concepts and SDGs in our daily life is that we can manage climate change. Sustainable development practices seek to reduce the use of fossil-based sources of fuel like oil, natural gas, and coal. Fossil fuel sources of energy are unsustainable since they will deplete in the future and are responsible for the emission of greenhouse gasses. Conclusion, I learned a lot about various ways and the importance of sustainable development practice in our life.

In the third week, we learned about holistic development about how Islamic teaching can contribute to sustainable development. I totally agree about Dr. Hamzah's point of view that he said there should be goal 18, which is ethical and spiritual. This is important as it relates the environment to its creator. Next is about Islam & environmental sustainability. The first resource that we discuss is water. Water is important as our future generation must have access to fresh & clean water. Our Prophet (PBUH) said: "Don't waste water even if you are on running water". Although we have plenty of water, we must use it wisely. This is the way of how to conserve the use of clean water. We can practice when we perform our ablution. According to Hadis Al: Bukhari, the appropriate amount of water used is 1 Mudd ( 0.5 liters). A lot of water can be saved if we use the appropriate amount according to the Hadis.
Third, we continue about "Al-fasad" which means corruption. ( Al Qasas 28:77). Corruption as polluted water and degradation will affect flora & fauna and human being. Degradation results in microplastic which affects the human being. For instance, humans eat fish which eat plankton that being affected by microplastic. Next is forestry. Land clearing for various development such as plantation and housing. We also discuss about Islam and social sustainability. Zakat can help reduce poverty. Nowadays, people find ways how to reduce income tax but it cannot be applied to zakat as it is stated in the tenets of Islam. In a nutshell, we learned how Islam is so much relatable to sustainable development and makes us more appreciative and grateful for our creator's most wonderful creation which is earth.

In the fourth week, we learned about how Maqasid As-Shariah and sustainable development correlated. Maqasid As-Shariah entails achieving human well-being on the one hand by enhancing the health or profit (maslahah) of the people and on the other hand by preventing harm (mafsadah). Its fundamental objectives include the protection of religion, life or self, intellect, prosperity and wealth, and personal honor or human dignity; all of which align with the 5ps of sustainable development: people, earth, prosperity, harmony, and partnership. As sustainable development seeks to strike a balance between the economy, social, and environmental spheres, Islam seeks to strike a similar balance in order to ensure efficient and effective resource use. Dr discussed the concept of khalifah (vicegerent-trustees) of Allah (SWT), and how, as stewards of the world's resources, human beings are to use natural resources in a spiritual and ethical relationship characterized by duty, peace, compatibility, gratitude, and reverence. Our university ( IIUM ) tries to develop IIICE (internationalization + integration + Islamisation = comprehensive excellence ) as our mission of the university. Dr. Hamzah highlights the second mission of iium which is to produce better quality intellectual by integrating the qualities of faith, knowledge, and good character. This is to serve as agents of comprehensive and balanced progress as well as sustainable development in Malaysia and the Muslim world. We also discovered how other major religions in Malaysia have their own views about nature and/or sustainable development. The Buddha in the sutras ordered us to take care of animals, and not to cut down grass and trees; let sentient beings dwell in their forests. I found that it is very interesting that we can discover different religious views about the environment as well as apply it in our daily life.

Dr Hamzah taught us about the concept of sejahtera. Sejahtera is widely used in Malaysia as a fundamental concept of human existence which is usually applied to various dimensions of life. Sejahtera also covered in terms of Tawheed. Its told us that truly holistic well-being encompasses beliefs, visions and practices for achieving true-well being and eternal happiness after death. This is closely related to the belief in the hereafter and vengeance of a loving God on the behavior way of life of his servants not only in Malaysia but throughout the university. IIUM also apply the concept of sejahtera. Mohd Kamal Hassan, he was the Rector of IIUM wrote a book called " The Malay concept of sejahtera from an Islamic Perspective". The Malay concept of sejahtera has received wide attention from the IIUM community. It is an an important concept which deals with the issue of quality of life, society and civilisation. It is a contemporary issue which requires from IIUM an Islamic intellectual interpretation and understanding for the benefit of the Malay and non-Malay communities.

This acronym urge society to focus on reducing the ecological footprint until it is balance with S.P.I.C.E.S. The phrase "from ego to eco" urge us to concern about other society as well as what other country facing. Nevertheless, many countries are doing the opposites - increasing their footprint and reducing average wellbeing.
