In English, comparatives are used to compare two people, things, or situations. There are different rules depending on the type of adjective: short adjectives, long adjectives, and irregular adjectives.

1. Short Adjectives

❤️Rule: For short adjectives (usually 1 syllable, sometimes 2), we add -er at the end. If the adjective ends in y, we change the y → i and then add -er.

❤️Examples:

old → older

funny → funnier

❤️Usage: Use to compare two people, things, or situations.

Example: John is older than Mary.

Example: This movie is funnier than the other one.

2. Long Adjectives

❤️Rule: For long adjectives (usually 2 or more syllables), we use more or less before the adjective.

❤️Examples:

difficult → more difficult

interesting → less interesting

❤️Usage: Use to compare two people, things, or situations when the adjective is long.

Example: This book is more difficult than that one.

Example: The second lesson is less interesting than the first.

3. Irregular Adjectives

❤️Rule: Some adjectives have irregular comparative forms. They do not follow the -er or more rule.

❤️Examples:

good → better

far → farther / further

❤️Usage: Use to compare two people, things, or situations.

Example: She is better at math than her brother.

Example: I can run farther than you

We use superlatives to say something is the most in a group.

1. Short adjectives (1–2 syllables)

Add the + adjective + -est

small → the smallest

tall → the tallest

Example:

John is the tallest boy in the class.

2. Long adjectives (2+ syllables)

Use the most + adjective

beautiful → the most beautiful

interesting → the most interesting

Example:

This is the most interesting movie.

3. Irregular adjectives

Some words change completely:

good → the best

bad → the worst

far → the farthest / the furthest

Example:

She is the best singer.

Tip: Always use the with superlatives.
