Wilma Rudolph was a famous runner. she was born on June 23, 1940. when she was young Wilma got polio and had to use a leg brace but Wilma practiced walking so much that she was finally able to walk with out it! later on Wilma became a runner she raced in many competitions and won. On one race Wilma ran with a sprained ankle AND STILL WON

James Cleveland "Jesse" Owens was an American track and field athlete and four-time gold medalist in the 1936 Olympic Games. Owens specialized in the sprints and the long jump and was recognized in his lifetime as "perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history".

At the 1936 Berlin Games, Owens won four gold medals, in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and the long jump. He managed to break or equal nine Olympic records and also set three world records. One of those world records was in the 4x100m relay. The quartet set a time that wouldn’t be bettered for 20 years.

He is famous for leading the civil rights movement, but before that, he was a preacher in Atlanta. He lived between 1926 to 1968. i think he was in the book because when it comes to the civil rights movement he is a HUGE deal. He is most well known for his i have a dream speech witch you can watch at this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smEqnnklfYs&t=25s . he tried to bring all people of colors together so everyone would have the same opportunity. but some people were "threatened" by him. one of these racists assassinated him on April 4, 1968. He lives from 1940 to 2020. I think they were included in this poem because they are an important figure in black history. I learned that john lewis helped a lot in the civil rights movement. Why did he want to help so much? When did he start protesting? A connection i have is i am protesting to help the sharks!

Congressman John Lewis was a member of the House of Representatives for Georgia.
He was the third chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or SNCC from 1963 to 1966. John Lewis was one of the leaders who organized the March on Washington in 1963 when he was 23 years old.
John Lewis did many other things. He led the first out of three Selma to
Montgomery marches. He was awarded the presidential medal of freedom
and more. John Lewis also fought for the Jewish people.
John Lewis died in 2020. He was 80 years old.

Jesse Owen was the Youngest Child of 10 children and his family did not have a lot of money.

In rural Alabama where he was born Owens realized that he had a passion for running. He ran across farms and on dirt roads.

At the age of 9 Jesse’s Family moved to Cleveland for better opportunities because of the Great Migration. There Jesse went to first grade when he was 10 years old.

Owens took different jobs in his spare time. He delivered groceries, loaded freight cars and worked in a shoe repair shop.

In college Jesse was already setting world records. In the long jump he jumped 26 feet and beat the world record by 8 inches.

In the 1935 Berlin Olympics JC set even more records and won 4 gold medals.

The Berlin Olympics was scary because of the racism of the nazis towards African Americans.

Billie holiday was born April 7, 1915 in Baltimore, Maryland and died July 7, 1959 in New York at 44 years old. Her real name was Eleanora Fagan. She was a famous American Jazz singer and swing music dancer. She was known for singing about her pain and suffering. “Strange Fruit” was a powerful song about the lunching of African Americans in the south. Some radio stations banned it. She moved to New York with her mother in 1928. She auditioned for a singing job in 1932 and got it. Her partner and friend Lester young, the saxophonist, nicknamed her “lady day” their work was stuff of legends. Billie was the first African American to work with white orchestra. Many didn’t like it so she left. She developed a drug use. She died because of cirrhosis. While in the hospital police watched over her. She was handcuffed.her friends couldn’t see her and she died alone.
