Son espacios terrestres o marinos reconocidos, establecidos y protegidos legalmente por el Estado peruano por su importancia para la conservación de la biodiversidad y su contribución al desarrollo sostenible del país.
Las ANP de administración nacional tienen dos estatus: las establecidas con estatus definitivo y con estatus transitorio que son las Zonas Reservadas.
En total, las áreas naturales protegidas se clasifican en 10 categorías.
