Caden has trouble with schizophrenia which is a disorder that affects a persons ability to think, behave, and speak correctly. This causes his family to feel they need to send him to a mental hospital, where he is diagnosed and treated.

Caden's family felt they needed to send him somewhere because " his behavior has been out of the ordinary", his father said.

When Caden starts to notice something is wrong, he is at a therapist and he thinks, "I never close my eyes, for fear of having to tell him- to tell myself- what's there.

"But it's not going to happen today- and there is a deep, abiding comfort in that. Deep enough to carry me through till tomorrow.", Caden realizes that he can get through by living in the present and pushing through.

Caden's illness reminds me of a mask, because behind a mask there is many faces. Just like how when Caden can change personalities because he believes he is changing realities.
