George Washington Carver was born in 1864 as a slave. His family lived on a farm in Diamond Grove, Missouri. His mother was named Mary, who was owned by Moses Susan Carver. When George was still young, he and his mother were kidnapped by slave traders. Moses Carver went searching for the two but only found George left on the road. After slavery ended, George and his brother James were raised by the Carvers who had no children of their own. They taught them how to read and write. Even though slavery had ended, there were not many schools for African-Americans like George. He eventually graduated from a high school in Kansas. George was especially interested in art, plants, and science. A teacher of his suggested that he study botany, which is study of plants and animals. Carver went to Iowa College to study botany. He became the best botany student in his class.

George Washington Carver accomplished many things in his lifetime. Carver earned a Bachelors Degree in Science as well as a Master Degree. Carver went on to become the first African American professor at Iowa State. In 1896, Booker T. Washington opened an all-black college in Alabama, called Tuskegee. He invited Carver to go there to teach. He ended up staying at this college the rest of his life. Carver also invented hundreds of products that were made from sweet potatoes, peanuts, and cotton stalks. Some examples are; cooking oil and dyes for clothing and soaps. In addition to creating new products, he also helped improve farming. He taught his students about crop rotation. This helps keep the soil full of nutrients. As a result of his teachings about agriculture, President Roosevelt and the U.S. Congress made January 5th, George Washington Carver Day, in his honor.
