Gilbert Baker, who grew up by having a identity of gay, joined the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a LGBTQ advocacy group and met Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay elected official in California. With Milk, Baker made a rainbow flag that represents the diversity of LGBTQ. He chose a rainbow as a symbol, because he believed that rainbows proclaim power, and it was hugely appropriate.

On April 28th, 2015, two men who were gay couple, Jim Obergefell and John Arthur, who were married in Maryland, where same gender marriage was legal, but not in Ohio, filed a lawsuit of legality of same gender marriage. Justice Anthony Kennedy, spoke, " "“The right to marry is a fundamental right inherent in the liberty of the person, and under the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment couples of the same sex may not be deprived of that right and that liberty.” By the dissenting opinions of the Justices, the ruling overturned 13 statewide bans that were still in force.

Instead of categorizing people who are transgender, "gender identity disorders" it was changed to "gender incongruence." People claim that now is the time to work of discriminatory policies, even though they take a while to dismantle, but it is really urgent.
