The North Carolina Museum of History allows teachers to rent a box called "Colonial North Carolina". This box would allow students to look at items from when settlers first came to North Carolina, explore how settlers changed the face of the places they settled, how geography shaped the settlement of people. Following viewing the history in a box, students could bring in their own cultural artifact and write an explanation of how this artifact would tell future generations about the people who lived here, the resources they had, and why they lived here.

This activity has students choose a historical figure to research and eventually role play as that person. This activity can be adapted to allow students to choose a figure from NC history that help shape the state into what it is today. After researching their historical figure, students will then role play the person to explain their role in NC history.

Youtube for schools

Youtube for schools allows teachers to sign up for educational appropriate material and curate their own videos. Taking a poll, teachers will ask students about what NC history topic they would like to learn more about, or give the students a chance to vote on preselected topics. Working in groups, students will research the cause of the event, key players, and the effect of the historical event. The class will then create a video together and upload it to youtube for schools to be shared with the other 4th grade classes in the school. The video can be made private and only be viewed by those who have been given the link. This allows students to learn about key historical events in our state and allows them to safely be a "youtube star". This resource could also be linked with the wax museum project, recording students acting as "wax figures" in their museum.

Historical NC Maps

This resource allows students to look at maps of North Carolina from different time periods. This resource would mesh well with any of the other resources listed above. When students learn about a historical event, they can look at a map from that time period and compare it to a modern day map. Looking at the differences between the two maps can help reinforce the ideas that the historical events that took place helped shape and change the face of our state.
