The name of evokes their aim to make art while abstract was also expressive or emotional in its affect. The artist were inspired by the surrealist ideas that art should come from the unconscious mind and by automatism  of artist Joan Miro.  
Also it was the first specifically American movement to achieve international influence and put New York City at the center of the western art world. In the 1940s in the New York City heralded the triumph of American Abstract expressionism, a modernist movement  that combined lesson learned from Pablo Picasso, Surrealism, Joan Miro and other artist.
