I noticed that social problems are complex. That's why my group should focus on a very specific mini-problem (one small yet important aspect of a huge social problem) that operates in a very particular setting and context.

(e.g. Hiden bullying in High School where marginalized students are normally the victims)

The world is changing and evolving, but so are the social issues. An example of a social issue is Bullying. Bullying is hard enough to manage in person, nevermind online. Just when you think you have one issue tackled, another issue appears. You have to be on the ball and always think what you can do to innovate and tackle issues

I think the talk really drove home how important it is as social entrepreneurs to focus on the problem and not the solution. It made me reflect on these companies that we talked about and realise that few of them talk about why this issue is something they have chosen to pursue themselves.

Most of the people we were shown during Ronans talk had experience in the area they were tackling, so it was easy to see why these issues spoke to them.

These successful social enterprises impressed me a lot, especially My street. I can see this enterprise keeps focusing on how to improve the life of homeless people, not only include helping them to find a job but also helping them to reflect on their life experiences. This program doesn’t consume much money but is effective and meaningful. I guess it is mainly because they really stay close to the problem and they show empathy with homeless people.

I really enjoyed Ronan's talk today. To me, the main learning I got from the session was that a true, successful social entrepreneur cares about their issue and in many cases can be directly involved / affected by the issue at hand. By caring about the issue this will in turn result in the social entrepreneur being more passionate and energetic, hence leading to a higher probability of success.

Ronan gave exemplery examples to actually utilise our strengths to actually understand the problems that go unnoticed and go under the radar. We need to ask ourselves the correct questions to actually figure out these problems. We need to personify and engage with the problems.

What will stay with me is the fact that some social enterprises leave an empty chair during a chair meeting for “the person”. Focusing a lot on the perspective of the person to understand what the problem is and to focus on what “the person” wants and not get carried away.

I thought it was interesting how Ronan spoke about the importance of observing and learning about the problem, rather than making assumptions. In all of the organisations mentioned, the people who came up with a solution had observed the issue or been directly affected by the issue. This allowed them to really understand the issue and come up with a better solution.
