Write an initial (1-2 paragraph) draft of your teaching philosophy on your own personal Padlet (below). We will work to evolve these philosophies throughout the semester so do not feel that they need to be mature at the beginning. We will use this Padlet as a space to post weekly reflections that assist you in evolving your philosophy. [Click the pink plus (+) sign in the lower right to create a post-it.] **PLEASE remember that these are forward-facing philosophies and accessible by your peers (and Rachel).

I think my learning/teaching philosophy is more progressive, and focused on hands-on learning. As a student, I have felt that I do better with visual learning, especially if I can apply my learning. In leadership positions I have also found that students do better in a more active, hands-on approach. I believe this approach lets students apply what they have learned and allows them to have a better understanding of the material!

I didn't realize that there are so many active learning modalities/techniques. They can all be applied in a variety of different ways to engage students with their learning. One of my favorite activities that I learned about was the snowball. I had never heard of that activity before and thought it was very fun way of starting class. There are also very many modalities that I was already familiar with, through my classes, but I didn't realize they were active learning techniques. Examples of this are polling, muddiest point, peer-evaluation, and reteaching. These activities make me want to include more active learning modalities in my teaching philosophy because I think they are a great way to engage students and have them apply their learning. To ensure that every student has access to the activities, I think zoom is a good option if they are unable to be in class, and also, just making sure all students feel included in the activities.

I think collaborative communication is a great way of including all students in a conversation and making sure they are actively engaged. I could use this in my own teaching philosophy so students are actively engaged and participating in discussion. I think it is a great way to make sure all students feel included in the conversation and more comfortable. To ensure all students have access, and feel comfortable, I could provide guiding open-ended questions to help facilitate discussion. Using more than one platform (like zoom) could also ensure that students participating at home are also included.

Something I learned today is how much emotion relates to learning. It makes sense, but I guess I just didn't realize how big of a factor it is. It was discussed in the video, that using all of your senses and moving around can improve learning. Also, re-teaching something instead of just listening to a lecture can be a valuable tool to retain information. I also think physical health is an important aspect. If you don't feel your best physically you may not be able to learn to the fullest potential. For my learning philosophy, I think including exercises where all the senses are being used is very important for students to retain information.

I think cooperative learning relates back to activities we learned about last week, for example, re-teaching. Explaining to others what we found interesting or important about the articles, is incorporating reading, writing, and speaking. We also were listening to what others were telling us about the articles. I think this is a great tool that incorporates many different senses. Then, we did the gallery walk where we got up and looked around the room at others thoughts. This is incorporating physical activity (which we also learned about last week), which is proven to help students learn more effectively. I think it's cool how various active learning techniques relate to each other.

I found the outcome a little difficult to write myself. Writing the outcome with the conditions was new to me. However, I did enjoy working through the process. Student learning outcomes can be assessed in a variety of ways including quizzes and exams. They can also be assessed through surveys and reflections. I think pedagogies like peer-teaching and collaborative communication, are both good tools that allow a student to practice their learning outcome. I really enjoyed class on zoom. I am always on zoom, so it cool for everyone else to be on there as well. I thought the interactive padlet was very fun and creative.

I think elements of today's learning that I can incorporate into my own learning philosophy are the ADDIE model and Merrills model. I also think today's learning did a great job of showing it is okay to ask for help and change a class structure around if things are not going well. We practiced today helping an instructor and identifying ways he could improve his class by using Merrills model. I think it is really important to ask for help even from an outside resource like we practiced today. Change and improvement are something I can include in my own teaching philosophy.

I felt at thought this case study was pretty relatable. I have also had issues in lab groups I have been in. My lab partners have come unprepared and did not help with the homeworks. So, I understand how frustrating it can be. I think an iRAT/tRAT is a good way to make sure that everyone is held accountable. I also think explicitly stating the expectations is very helpful, especially in lab. I think things I would integrate into my teaching philosophy are fostering a welcoming environment for everyone and setting clear expectations. I really liked the stray and stay activity. I think it is very similar to reteaching, another method which I really like.

I also struggled a little bit to come up with a question relating to my object. I think a way epistemithrive is promoted in this activity is making sure everyone's experience is valid. This helps promote a classroom environment where everyone feels like they matter. I think in terms of using this to grade a student. Just knowing that every student is different and as an instructor you may have to make adjustments based on the experience of another student.
