Using Language Vocabulary and Specific Evidence from the Genie Case Study and the Sound Pattern Experiment, answer the following questions within your group.

1. Should you begin learning a second language in 1st grade, or do 1st graders already have enough to learn? Explain your view with support.

2.Although children may have a superior ability to learn language, at what types of learning do teens and adults excel?

3. Consider Whorf's position on Language Determinism, why is being bilingual important?

Children should learn a foreign language starting in 1st grade. Due to the critical period theory, stating that once after puberty it is almost impossible to to learn a new language, which would explain why Cody got a C in Spanish 1. Also as you age you start putting more meaning into language which could make difficult to just learn a language without putting meaning to it.

Since they are still in their critical period, it will be easy for them to retain the information, but only in small bits.

1. We believe 1st grade is young to teach students a different language, also the children wouldn't have a say in what language they'd like to learn. If a class is taught another language, the simplicity of the alphabet or phenomes would help teach them.
2. Teens and adults learn the syntax better than children do, since it requires a pretty good knowledge and understanding of the language. Also, it requires higher-level thinking that young children may not be able to do. ei: The meaning behind sentences.
3. Being bilingual would expand someone's ability to understand other cultures and different ways to think. This would give you more understanding of other cultures, and other people.

Teaching 1st graders a new language should be encouraged, because they are more able to efficiently learn a language when they are at this young age. However, they also have a detailed enough understanding of their native language. Adults are able to learn languages fast at first, by picking up lots of vocabulary and entire sentences at a time. They also have a better understanding of syntax. By being bilingual, you are able to associate with a wider variety of people, and will have a better understanding of different cultures, and therefore might be more accepting of different ideas.

We definitely believe that a 2nd language should be integrated into the curriculum of the first grade due to the fact they are more primed to acquire a 2nd language than an adult past puberty.
2.)
