Generic lesson where students choose between two commonly seen choices. There are many ways of going about it. Standing up and going to one side or holding up a paper with their answer or raising hands for one or the other. I also encourage you to play the game as well.

A mix of Empathy and a sense of humor

While we empathize with and do hold students accountable. We have to remember most of the time they are just being goofy middle schoolers. They are going to say and do something stupid. Try to be light hearted about it. Try not to take the things they say to heart. Always be ready to leave something that happened in the past and start over with the student the next day. We are adults.

Get to Know You / Extra Time Activity

I like doing fun "Would You Rather" questions. You can have them move to the left and right sides of the room based on their questions. For example, would you rather sneeze meatballs or shoot spaghetti noodles from your fingers? You can Google "Would You Rather" questions and there are a TON of fun lists.

Get to know you notecard, use four corners to ask fave music/artist, movie, video game, anime, etc. Back side, something they want to tell you specifically. I also gave the notecards back the last day of class to see how they changed and that was fun.

Repeat/Practice

The biggest behavior management tool I learned from my last instructional coach was repeating procedures. If the students don't get the procedure, but the procedure makes sense, they just need to practice the procedure together. Sometimes, you might have to repeat and practice 5 or 6 times.

give kids a cool down space and have private conversations (public humiliation or calling out will not teach other students to follow procedures)

One on one conversations (where possible). Helps to be on their level and really get at why they are doing things and also show that you care.
