Drugs are categorized based on risk to the fetus. Many drugs are placed in Category C; meaning not enough research has been done to determine if the drugs are safe. It is currently unknown how the placenta allows some molecules and not others. There are several drugs that are medically necessary for pregnant mothers but pose a risk to the fetus, thereby placing the mother at risk for medical complications.

This technology would be extremely helpful assessing drug safety for pregnant women. This is especially helpful to those who are taking medications that are medically necessary, keeping both mother and baby safe from harm.
This research is just one of the many doors being opened for 'organs-on-a-chip' that will be used for drug testing in various areas of medicine.

Due to the risk of affecting fetuses, this technology cannot be tested on pregnant mothers. Donated placentas are being used but are only viable for a few hours. This could create difficulty in collecting accurate data.

This is a great step toward a breakthrough, as many pregnant women suffer through medical complications due to halting a medically necessary medication, that may cause risk to the fetus. I have personally gone through this with migraine medication while pregnant. As a nurse in psychiatry, I had pregnant patients who couldn't take their psychiatric drugs due to this issue, which imposed a different risk to the mother and fetus altogether.
