You were one of the most passionate and dedicated educators I’ve known—committed not just to academic excellence but to nurturing people as whole individuals. Your presence had a way of lifting people, and your classroom was a place where students thrived—year after year, they achieved world topper awards under your guidance, a true reflection of your excellence and dedication.

Beyond the classroom, your love for Ms. Desire was beautiful and inspiring. I find comfort knowing you're reunited with her now. Thank you, Mr. Rob, for your kindness, your guidance, and the joy you brought to those around you.

Rest in peace.

Dear Rob

I have known you since the first day I arrived at EMS 16 years ago. Your enthusiasm and good spirit immediately impressed me. You always made light work of anything that needed to be done. Always cracking a joke or having something funny to say.

My son, Anthony, till this day, still speaks about how you brought history to life with all your stories and characterisation of historical events. All your students, I know, will be able to share the same sentiments.

Since your retirement from EMS, we were able to enjoy some time together during summer break, when I was home. We would then enjoy a meal [and a drink] at your favourite Sunday afternoon [kuier] spot. At these times, you would ask about every person at EMS, checking who was still there and who had moved on, speaking about EMS with a tear in your eyes. I will miss our visit this summer, but know that you are now where you need to be, with Desiree, the person you missed the most in your last years.

The picture attached shows Desiree and Rob visiting with me and Janine at home in Port Elizabeth, now Qgeberha [another source of one of his jokes when we met soon after the name change]. This was just before COVID and the next time we were able to visit, you were alone with your trusted companion, Bentley.

Rest in peace now with your loved one.

Greg and Janine

Good and fun times that is how I remember you celebrating life. From Shakespeare to Harry Potter - Literature week, I remember you used to say that no matter how many times you'd watch these movies, reading their books would give you more of a vivid imagination than movies do. We have celebrated so many international days at school and you've added fun and lively memories to them. I've joined you to many trips, the last one was to mangroves and Kayaking. We had a memorable time. You planted mangrove plants there. Your essence remains at that place. We were late to return to school that day, so you made sure to call your wife Mrs Desire, may her soul (RIP), to take care of my daughter until we were back. You were a caring person. One time I had to take my students (all girls) to their class trip but it started raining so we couldn't go. You gave me your house key to use your outdoor facilties and the BBQ set. The girls couldn't believe they would have such a fun trip to the head of school's house. We made sure we left the place clean and tidy. You also had a saying about life in a humorous way, named it as flipped life: "kids get the energy without the wisdom; adults get the wisdom without the energy (when adults need the energy the most)." May you rest in peace Mr. Rob, you will never be forgotten.

Najat

You are probably up there with a front-row seat, popcorn in hand, watching us scramble to do the impossible and laughing your head off.

We talked about death more than once, and somehow those chats always turned into comedy shows. You thought the whole idea of not existing was absurd and if there was any chance of coming back to pester people, you would definitely sign up for it. So if the lights start flickering and my snacks go missing, I’ll know it’s you keeping things interesting as always.

You believed in me when no one else did- which either makes you a genius or a terrible judge of character:)

Always in my heart.

"One way or another Mr Al Khuzaei. One way or another." I never forgot those words, I would hear them a lot from you Mr. Tucker. You were always there for me, you pushed me to show my potential in school since year 1. Since year 1, everyday I would be excited to go see my mom afterschool everyday to tell her the funny jokes you did, the silly things you did to make us kids in EMS laugh. We were always excited in class discussing what you would dress up as in international day, or what's the next story you would tell us in class, we all loved you deeply.

One of your stories that I'll never forget, you just finished serving your army and got married to Ms. Tucker. You were on your honeymoon, and rented a place on top of a mountain. Going down the mountain was easy for the both of you and you continued your day outside with no problems. Until you had to go back together at the end of the day, Ms. Tucker looked up the steps to the mountain to call it a day and said that she couldn't do it. You then decided to carry her on your back and picked her up all the way up the stairs to the rented house for the honeymoon.

I never forgot this story you told us in particular because it's symbolic to who you are and your personality. Even when we were on our lowest low, you still picked us up and helped us climb the mountain, even when we didn't ask for it. You saw that we needed help and you helped without asking questions. The purest heart that wanted the best for everyone.

I would like to express my appreciation for showing us the way when we were lost, thanks for picking us up and telling us to keep going, thanks for all the laughs and smiles you gave us, thanks for everything you taught us and thanks for being in our lives. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't be where I am today.

We will forever miss you and keep you in our hearts.

Ahmed Al Khuzaei

It’s hard to put in words as to how I feel about receiving the news that you were no longer with us. The minute I heard that my brain started taking a trip down memory lane and I started reliving all the memories that we shared together along the years.

As much as it hurts, as much as it stings, yet I know we should be celebrating the incredible life you had and the incredible moments you shared with many people during your time in EMS.

I remember when you started teaching me history back in year 10, to me it was the most enjoyable subject that I have ever taken. And I still remember everything you taught me, and believe or not I still have my history notebooks till this day which I truly cherish. It was incredible watching you teach us something that was supposed to be complicated yet you did it in the most funny and easy way for the students. Your jokes, your kind heart and and your advice were a turning point in a lot of our lives and I truly wish you know that.

Growing up in school I never knew what I wanted to do post school. I had no plans, no future planned, nothing on my mind. All it took was for your class to make me decide as to what I wanted to do for my future and I can’t thank you enough for it. You had faith in me and you inspired me to reach for the stars because that’s what you expected from your students.

And what would we do without your jokes, I still remember how you used to say that Mrs. Tucker used to tell you it’s either her or Bentley that stays at the house and you’d say bye bye to her and wave at her because it annoyed her that Bentley enjoyed watching the history channel with you.

Your love for Lord of the Rings is something I will never forget, and I will always remember how you used to wear the “Ruling Ring” everyday and how much you enjoyed reading the books. You will always had a young heart that loved life no matter what was happening.

Lastly, and I know this is going to sound cheesy but I admired the man you were, I admired how highly you spoke about Mrs. Tucker and how much you truly loved her. You taught us valuable lessons in life about loyalty, respect and what true love truly meant. And I am proud to have been a part of your life one way or another. You will never be forgotten, your memories and stories will always be a part of me and my family. May you rest in peace.

Ali Al Sheebani

Mr. Tucker, Our Dear Mr. Tucker

When we all started school as kids, I still remember my first day at EMS in Year 1. I had the privilege of having Mrs. Tucker as my teacher that year, and we all loved how she spoke about you. It was always wonderful whenever you visited her class. Even back then, you already held a special place in our hearts.

I always hoped one day I’d get to be in your class, and thankfully that wish came true.

EMS has always carried the motto “A Place Where We Belong.” Whenever I hear those words, you're the first person I think of. You were such a big part of what made school feel like home. We would look forward to your class, or even just passing by your room to say hi. Sitting with you during break, chatting whenever you were free, listening to your stories, and laughing about Bentley and Mrs. Tucker, those were the moments that really stayed with me.

Your history class was something else. You made us love the subject without even trying. The way you told stories made us feel like we were actually living those moments. You had a gift for making learning enjoyable and meaningful.

One of the things I admired most about you was your loyalty. You showed it quietly and sincerely through your dedication, the way you cared for your students, and the love you showed to Mrs. Tucker and Bentley. And of course, your storytelling stayed with us. You had a way of making people feel heard, understood, and connected.

You weren’t just a teacher to me. You were part of my school life, part of my childhood, and honestly, part of my family. You taught my brothers. You taught my sister. You’ve been part of our lives for more than a decade, and that’s something I will always be grateful for.

Because of you, I still make it a point to visit EMS. Not out of routine, but out of love. You’re a big reason that place will always feel like home to me.

I could keep going and still not say enough. You meant a lot to all of us. You made a real difference. And you’ll always have a place in our hearts. You were with us in the best of times. And your memory will stay with us through the rest.

May your soul rest in peace, Mr. Tucker. Thank you for everything.

Saoud Al-Sheebani

As a student who was present in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, I was never taught by Mr. Tucker. Nevertheless, we always crossed paths and greeted each other with full respect and compassion. So now, I realized that he was one of the reasons that contributed to the person who I am today via his impact (direct or indirect), and for that I am forever grateful. On the other hand, I saw (first hand) how he was adored by all his students and highly respected by his peers and management.

Rest Easy Dear Mr. Tucker!

It's truly rare to find a colleague and friend like Robert Tucker. As the former Head of English Modern School, Robert led with a quiet strength and deep respect from all corners of our community. Having worked alongside him as his Assistant Head for many years, I witnessed firsthand his unwavering dedication and his remarkable ability to inspire both staff and students. What truly speaks to his character is his decision to step down from leadership and return to the classroom, choosing to finish his distinguished career doing what he loved most, teaching. He was as respected for his administrative acumen as he was for his pedagogical wisdom, and we all learned immensely from him. Beyond the school gates, Robert and Desire were also my neighbors. We shared countless weekends creating wonderful memories on our building's rooftop, transforming it into a vibrant BBQ area where food, laughter, and great stories flowed freely. Robert, along with Desire, will be dearly missed but will always hold a special place in the heart of the EMS community.
