I wanted something that would explore something bigger than just a known figure from mythology.That is why I chose to draw the concept of the struggle of life and death. The figure connected to the bright tree is life, strongly stretching up toward the daybreak sky. The figure connected to the ground is death. With her black heart, the figure is spreading dark veins that kill the land around them. Putting them in the center of the picture was important, as they alone pull off the theme. I also did not want this piece to be too overwhelming. I wanted a certain amount of objects, but I always had the plan to stick to a certain color scheme. I chose to use blues, purples, greens, browns, and greys. The ruby breaks this rule, but since it is the only thing that does, it makes it stand out more. The skull, the gun, and the ruby are in the foreground, as they help symbolize the concept without personifying it. The skull and the gun symbolize death, but the ruby connects to both. Rubies symbolize power and passion, which can be directed to both sides. Those who commented on my picture suspected a greater significance regarding these objects. I did three projects with colored pencil, and each time, I learned something new about making my art "pop". The first project was my general introduction, as I did not have a lot of experience. The second project (the theme project) was where I really took what I learned and applied it to a bigger (and better in my eyes) concept. 

One artistic struggle that I learned from was having the end product not look as much like what I intended. This was apparent to me in the still life project. Mine was an oil painting, and oil paint was something I had never used before. I've used acrylic for years, but oil, from what I've learned, it much different. I wanted the project to look as much like the photo as possible, but I found it difficult to do with the paint blending as much as it did. Blending colors is great if I was working on the background or certain colors in the glass, but for the reflections and the shine, it was very difficult. I had to completely repaint the center (clear) bottle because the reflective property was not being expressed well enough on the canvas. 

In the future, I want to use oil paint to its full potential. Like I said, I use acrylic paint for a good deal of my projects outside of school, but I really enjoyed the blending abilities of oil paint. With acrylic, the paint dries in a matter of minutes, so there isn't a lot of time to blend it into some other portion of the painting unless you work ridiculously fast (which I don't).
