Dayang: Trending in Twitter, during Jeffrey Eipstein's. People were sharing stories in MY, but still no real results.

Dell: Didn't see people (own circle of friends) talking about #metoo. Saw it globally though, and are aware of it. Not sure if SH are happening at own's backyard.

Calan: In MY, feels like less people know about it. It's normal for people to feel more pressured compared to other places where people are more accepting. For me, was aware when it was during the Harvey Weinstein's thing. Feels like it's not something I would encounter. Talked to housemate and said, "We've all been sexually harassed. We just didnt realize." When came back to MY, felt like there's a lot more stigma and lack of awareness. People dont talk about it as much.

Dayang: Victim blaming is still a big thing here maybe that's why people dont really talk about it. BOP always on the victim, makes it harder for victim to come forward and talk about it.

Dell: Shared personal experience - encountered a man who asked her what was she wearing. Traumatized.

Dayang: Shared personal experience - a man on motorbike flashed himself, was traumatized and horrified.

Dell: When people actually listen, people will feel safe to speak up.

Dayang: Goes back to support system, potential response that you will get when you share.

Calan: Sharing on FB statuses of personal experiences by friends, element of safety in numbers (when many came forward and shared experiences on FB). Haikal Idris (Twitter famous) - many were defending him. Dunno if they took legal action against him or he got away.

Dayang: Few people went viral ie. Dai'e Syed got charged, Qayyum Jumaidi (dunno what happened to him).

Angela: On what Dell had shared - bystander attitude online and offline. People may pretend not to see what's happening. What makes us want to take that risks to speak up? Calan said, there's no reason for people to lie about it. How do we deal with the cost of speaking up? "You can't believe women in a blanket manner." - this became the pushback against #metoo. Calan, did you ever wonder how come you didnt notice the SH happening around women around you?

Calan: Did asked. But friends said didnt tell him cuz didnt want him to cause a scene.

Angela: Difficult to know when SH is happening. Severity may differ.

Martina: I'm always using the public transportation. SH has became a norm. Men dont realize what is SH & to what degree can equate to SH ie. catcalling. How I started speaking out? By having a group that I could trust and understand.

Calan: SH Bill proposes SH Tribunal that would cater to survivors. Similar concept to an Employment Tribunal.

Dayang: In MY, culture of our community as well. Goes back to the qs of "what did you wear? were you inviting it?" The degree to how the #metoo movement works doesnt reach the potential its supposed to reach in MY.

Dell: Culture of religion - Islam etc, is there a shortcoming where cuz of our values, there are certain impressions yg girls/women did something to actually cause it? Common argument.

Calan: Dont know if it comes from Islam but maybe comes from expression of Islam in MY. Wouldnt say it's an inherent value from religion.

Angela: Agrees with Calan. Culture of silencing women & girls are in every culture.Girls are treated differently than boys growing up. "Boys will be boys." Strong social conditioning, results in damage when those statements are echoed.

Nurul: Agree with Calan. It's just how religion is interpreted. Practices can differ. The whole narrative underpinning boys will be boys, is about what girls wear, but even if you don't wear anything, it's not an invitation to sexually harass you.

Dayang: When survivors started sharing their stories, it provides a route for people to also share. Other people can then relate to the stories, when people come together, it creates volume of stories which then makes the issue more prominent. This thing is actually structural.

Calan: Esp when you dont know that these things are happening to your friends, you thought it's just you. When people speak up, you wont feel so alone anymore.

Dell: Workplace, school - when people make a stand, esp people in position of power, people will feel more encouraged to speak up.

Calan: Some politicians have also been speaking up on SH ie. Hannah Yeoh. Wan Azizah?

Dayang: Well, she's not against child marriage.

Angela: Child marriage is a difficult issue since it's within state powers. Politicians needed to push them to not use punitive law.

Dayang: When people started sharing, created a route for people to share, so results in a volume of stories on the same issues, to show that it's structural, not an outlier case.

Calan: Esp when you don't know that the same thing has happened to your friends, and then you realise that there have been similar incidents, you don't feel so alone anymore.

Dell: When someone with influence says something positive in support, it does draw people to do the same

Calan, Dayang: Good that there is support for SH. But child marriage, difficult issue, still a challenge. No clear support (e.g. Wan Azizah).

Dayang: When heard stories of friends being SH in public, felt angry as to why the survivor didnt do anything to fight back? People respond differently to trauma. It's good to hear stories & experiences of other survivors because it may varies.

Calan: Narrative - women/girls gets SH but not men. Toxic masculinity prevents many men to come forward when faced with SH.

Angela: Perceptions/understanding of SH - lack of by many. Confusion about sexual harassment = expression of sexual interest/sexual attraction.

Nurul - people with disabilities, trans people also face problems sharing their stories as well, because of stigma, victim-blaming
