Due to the lack of evidence of tattooing in ancient Egypt. Scientist have estimated that tattooing began around 200 B.C.
Scientist have also estimated that tattooing entered Egypt through Nubia (a region along the Nile rivers encompassing the areas between what is today central Sudan and southern Egypt).
The religious group known as the Coptic (an ethno-religious group that primarily inhabit the area of modern Egypt, where they are the largest Christian denomination) practiced tattooing.
Coptic tattoos often consist of three lines, three dots and two elements, reflecting the Holy Trinity. The tools used to perform these tattoos had an odd the number of needles to bring luck and good fortune. Many Copts also had Coptic cross tattooed on the inside of their right arm.
This practice may have been influenced by a similar practice tattooing religious symbols on the wrists and arms during the Ptolemaic Period (when a Macedonian Greek royal family, which ruled the Ptolemaic Kingdom in Egypt during the Hellenistic period which lasted for 275 years, from 305 to 30 BC.
