La quantitat de parlants per idioma és increïblement desproporcionada. Entre la meitat de la població només es parlen 7 idiomes dels 7000 que coneixem. L’altra meitat parla 6993 idiomes, més o menys. Una proporció realment sorprenent.

Hi ha més de 1.000 llengües amb entre 100 i 999 parlants, més de 300 amb entre 10 i 99, i 114 amb nou parlants o menys. Aquestes 114 llengües tenen tan pocs oradors que podria cabre a l'estadi Camp Nou de Barcelona (per posar un exemple), 170 vegades.Sigui com sigui, tots parlem almenys un. Tot i que és impossible donar una xifra exacta -ni tan sols aproximadament, es calcula que al món es parlen en l'actualitat unes 7.000 llengües, de les quals només 600 tenen més de 100.000 parlants.
