War is peace
Freedom is slavery Ignorance is strength

Every day you hear these slogans. Every day you experience these forced realities. Every day you suffer. Experience and see the life of Winston, a man who lives in a society where these conditions are reality. All of Winston's actions are seen, his job is to erase history in order to favor the government, and he is not allowed to show emotion. These harsh realities of 1984 and the demonstration of what can happen to our society is one of the most unforgettable reads. Read and analyze the world of 1984, and try to heed George Orwell's warning.

These devices record your questions and responses and the people that are employed listen to them to supposedly "check" the accuracy of the Echo's response. This connects to the novel as it shows how things and technology in our daily life is listening to us and being recorded, similar to what the telescreens are doing in 1984.

I connected the plot and ideas of 1984 to the television show House of Cards. This show demonstrates how the president (in the show, president Underwood) takes control of the government and the thoughts of the people around him. Underwood's aggressive behavior to those under him and his ability to control what people think is connected to 1984, as his actions are similar to the actions of the Party and Big Brother in the novel. Both control their citizens and what they think, and both are actively fears by their subjugates.

                 OVERALL REVIEW

Overall I would say I thoroughly enjoyed 1984. While there was some negatives about the book that I had, most of the book I liked extremely. There are multiple parts I enjoyed, one of the main parts being Julia and Winston's relationship. Their relationship defied all odds of the society and was built on respect and understanding. Along with this, the line that their relationship was a political act showed how brave they truly were to engage in this relationship. Another part I thoroughly enjoyed was the message the book was attempting to sent. While Orwell was very blunt in this message, the warning and ideals he was trying to represent was done tastefully and truly made me wonder about the place our society was heading.

There is really only one part of the book I did not enjoy, and that was its predictability. This is why the novel only received four stars. At the begggining of the novel, I predicted that Julia would be Winston's lover and that O'Brain would be the villain. Their early roles and positions in Winston's thoughts made it obvious they would have relevance and be either evil or important to Winston. O'Brian was very predictable, and I thought that him being apart of the Thought Police was a bit of a cliché. If Orwell did a better job at not giving away the roles of the characters early on I would have enjoyed the book vastly more.

While I did have some gripes, I think it is important for every person to read. The reason is that the message of the book and its relevancy to our world will not ever be irrelevant. Orwell's warning and message will be impactful to all people who read it, and even if you will not enjoy the plot, the ideals and ideas mentioned will make you think about the society around you.

What can we learn?

In 1984, we can learn to question our surroundings to question the society and government we live in. In our day and age, technology and information is more widespread than ever. In the novel, we can learn that the technology we have might not all just benefit us. The novel will teach people to stay away from the type of government and technology seen and to stick up for their rights of privacy and individual freedoms. Winston is meant to represent how all of us should act, rebel against the unjust policies of our government. Orwell wrote this novel in order to encourage all of us to take a second look at our surroundings in order to benefit society and to keep it from becoming the world of INGSOC and Big Brother.

                               THEMES

Theme: While controlling people by fear will keep people in your control for the short term, keeping people happy and free is the only way to keep any bit of control for the long term.

Evidence:

We constantly see rebels and rebel organizations such as the Brotherhood and the people who are in support of Goldstein and his ideas. The rebels are united under the thought that their lack of privacy and their fear of the government is something that needs to be changed, showing that people will rebel under a government controlling by fear.

Winston and Julia want to obtain happiness by being in a relationship. However since the government prevents them and attempts to control them by using fear, they do not stay obliged to the government, and shows how people will eventually fight back under fear.

Theme: Your actions and they way you show yourself will never be true until there is no one with their eye on you.

Evidence:
1. In 1984, the citizens such as Julia and Winston act emotionless and completely obedient to the government while they are being observed by Big Brother though the telescreens. However, their true colors are expressed whenever they are not in presence of one, proving this theme.
2. Parsons, Winston's neighbor, is seen to be kind yet foolish when he is around his peers and the telescreen. Towards the end of the novel, when there is no longer judgmental eyes on him, he is seen to be a coward and someone willing to sacrifice someone else in order to escape persecution, showing how he becomes true when he is no longer being judged/observed.

Theme: The past defines the present and the future, and without the true past, the future and present will make no sense.

Evidence:
1. In the novel, INGSOC and the Party are seen to be wiping out the past that does not agree with their philosophies. In response, the current present makes little sense as old monuments no longer exist and people that others have known no longer are supposed to have ever existed, showing how the present makes no sense.
2. Winston's job supports this theme as well. His job is change and erase the past to fit with the ideas and in support of the Party. This job shows how the future makes no sense, as the past is constantly changing, and what the past is supposed to be based on (records and memories) are not longer reliable. This proves the present in controlled by the past and that any alteration of the past will muddy the present/future.
