People in generaly were poor, with low salaries and lack of money, so because of that children had to work. Normally people lived in slums, in semi-detacheds and very small houses.
Now, looking at the academic life, school changed a lot. It was more strict and they had a lot of rules, two of them were the gender division and the formal relationships betwen teachers and students.
Hard Times is one of the books that portrays life in the 19th century. It is a fictional industrial town, called Coketown, somewhere in the north of England in the mid-1800s. The town is dirty and noisy, and life of the people working in factories is hard. Mr Gradgrind, who is the local MP, represents the people of Coketown in Parliament. He has set up a school in the town and is very proud of his book.
By reading the first chapter we can tell that teachers wanted to the students learned only practical things, facts.

Trough a research, I found out two very interesting things about Summerhill School.
