The United States feared that Cuba would become communist under Russian influence. The US attempted to overthrow Castro (leader of Cuba) and failed miserably. Castro feared another US invasion and allowed the Soviet Union to construct nuclear missile sites in Cuba. JFK feared a Soviet Union nuclear attack and decided to place a naval blockade around Cuba to prevent Soviet ships from bringing supplies.

The Soviet Union built a wall in Berlin to separate the two sides of Germany and keep people from fleeing East Germany. The wall was also built to limit US influence on west Germany.
