This is a fantastic, original story for promoting mark-making and inspiring creativity as well as expressing your own ideas. There can be a lot of work on use of colours and how we can use them imaginatively or in different ways. The conversational tone of the letters could be a good opportunity for children to write back to the crayons, or draw them pictures. I particularly liked the squabble between the yellow and orange crayon which could be used to promote problem-solving by asking children their ideas for helping keep the crayons happy.
There are also some great opportunities for Personal Social and Emotional Development here. The different personifications of the crayons reflect all different types of personalities but are all given an equal voice and sense of importance. The issue of gender and stereotypes about the colour pink in cleverly turned on its head when pink crayon suggests a pink cowboy or monster could be drawn by the male artist.
The book also explores different mediums and representations of writing and drawing; letters, pictures, colouring books, school work.
I think this book could help children to feel very special about their artistic creations as they can imagine the crayons as friends that they are responsible for and who value their efforts.
