The North Korean Crisis was fought by the U.S. who aided the southern part of Korea. While the North side was aided by China and the Soviet Union. This proxy conflict took place in the early 1950's, the beginnings of the Cold War. Even though the U.S was fighting China and the Soviet Union the war took no part in any of those three countries. This conflict was fought in Korea. The way this war was fought is the U.S sided with South Korea and aided them with supplies and military to try and stop the north which was aided by both China and the Soviet Union. The reason why this war was fought was because China and the Soviet Union were trying to spread Communism throughout the whole world. While the U.S.A was trying to stop the spread of Communism this is because of their beliefs of containment, stop the spread of Communism at all costs, and the Domino effect were if one country was to fall to Communism all the neighboring countries will fall to communism soon. (Global Conflict Tracker, 2022, Para. 1-3)

What role (if any) should the United States have in this conflict? Provide an overview of America’s role AND take a stance. What do you think America’s role should be in the conflict?

The role of the United States was to aid the southern side of Korea with supplies and troops to try and stop the spread of communism. The U.S first got involved in the war in the early 1950's. Once the U.S saw that Northern Korea was trying to militarily conquer Korea and therefore unify it under Communism, they started to take the matter super seriously. The National Archives states, “Concerned that the Soviet Union and Communist China might have encouraged this invasion, President Harry S. Truman committed United States air, ground, and naval forces to the combined United Nations forces assisting the Republic of Korea in its defense. President Truman designated General Douglas MacArthur as the Commanding General of the United Nations Command” (National Archives, n.a., Para. 1). I think America’s role in the conflict is spot on. Their big thing during the Cold War was to try and stop the spread of Communism. That is what they did. They were able to not let Communism spread to the whole of Korea in the Sorthern part.

A recent development pertaining to the Korea crisis is that in 2018, North and South Korea are trying to work out a deal where North Korea would freeze weapons and missile testing. The leaders of North and South Korea both signed an agreement pledging to work together toward denuclearization of Korea as a whole. With this agreement the official end of the Korean war came. Simultaneously North Korea and the United States of America were working out a deal in Singapore where they were about to come to an agreement and were able to release a joint statement about denuclearization. (Global Conflict Tracker, 2022, Para. 10-11)

Why should American citizens be aware of this conflict?

American citizens should be aware of this conflict because it could directly and indirectly affect them. Northern Korea could always just push the button and send a nuke hurdling at one of the U.S’s most populated cities killing many people. Another reason why American citizens should be aware of this conflict is that if North Korea is to win and turn all of Korea into a Communist country, that is one more small piece in the puzzle to turning the whole world Communist, meaning all American citizens would be losing their freedom.

My future predictions for the conflict are that North Korea will soon denuclearize to where they have the same amount of nukes as the U.S. Soon North Korea and South Korea will become one big country again and Communism in the northern part of Korea will soon be gone. Finally the whole country of Korea will become a Democracy.
