Nights disappeared in the white glare of his laptop screen, strings of logic unfurling faster than he could think them. It wasn’t discipline so much as compulsion - the work swallowed hours, relationships and entire seasons without warning.

The app began as a joke. He built it after a date so dull he came home and - half-buzzed - decided an algorithm could have done better. A simple interface, quick swipes, an almost smug promise of better matches than human instinct could manage. He showed it to two friends from university - people with sharper instincts for money than for decency - and they didn’t laugh. They saw potential. Jiwoon didn’t notice when the app stopped being his game and became something they were willing to cut corners for. By the time it was everywhere, by the time people were building relationships and breaking them through his design, the shifts in the code had already begun. Location tracking became constant, private messages became visible to admins. He caught them using the access to follow women they matched with - to see where they lived, who else they were talking to.

It should have ended there.

He doesn’t talk about how he made his money. He doesn’t mention that the phone in his pocket is locked behind layers of security that would make most people suspicious. He doesn’t date, though he could. The truth is simpler and less noble, really. He still checks the app.

Some nights it’s a matter of scanning through the admin logs, making sure no one’s crossing the same lines they did before. Other nights, it’s something else - curiosity, habit, the small and bitter comfort of looking into lives he’ll never touch. He tells himself it isn’t harm if he doesn’t act on what he sees. And in the quiet hours, with the windows open to the sound of the tide, he wonders if the ocean feels as much like escape to anyone else as it does to him.
