As punishment, Atticus orders Jem to read aloud to Mrs. Dubose for a month, in an attempt to teach him a lesson about the importance of empathy and tolerance.

Reluctantly, Jem complies, and Scout joins him during their reading sessions. Mrs. Dubose is very sick and hooked up to a morphine addiction. At first, she appears cold and uninterested, but as time goes on, Jem notices a change in her demeanor. Atticus believes that her struggle and determination to die free of addiction make her a courageous woman, despite her harsh exterior.

Through this experience, Jem learns about the complexities of human nature and the importance of looking beyond surface appearances.
