Growing up with a learning disability was a challenge. Being in a resource class that didn't create an individual plan for me or other students and instead grouped us together even though we all needed different types of help pushed me to want to change that system. I also coached volleyball throughout high school and loved working with kids.

I decided to become an educator when I was around 3 years old in preschool. I am not sure if I was trying to impress my teachers at the time but here we are 20 years later fulfilling my dream. I never changed my dream of being an educator and so I just rolled with it. Then later on in elementary school I realized I LOVED being around young kids and so I decided to continue my 3 year old dream and here I am.

I am an educator because I love working one on one with students, I love making connections with students, I love seeing that light bulb go off in their heads when they finally understand something! Being an educator for me, is making connections with students, and creating a safe environment that caters to each students abilities.

-Erika B.......It just seemed to make sense. I resisted getting my credential because that is what everyone else was doing when I left college (Undergrad). But I ended up working in Education for the next 20 years anyway as a substitute teacher and paraeducator. Both of my (now adult) children are autistic, so I am applying what I have experienced, and hopefully that will make me a better "official" teacher.

As an English language learner, I appreciate the hard work that teachers do for students. I immigrated to the U.S when I was five years old and struggled in school. I needed so much help that I was placed on an Individual Education Plan. I remember the patience and compassion the teachers showed me when teaching me English. I have chosen to enter the teaching profession, specifically the path of an education specialist, because of my grade school experiences and my appreciation of what teachers did for me. I want the opportunity to help other students move forward the way I was helped.

Stefanie - While I loved school socially, I was not a naturally great student. On top of that I was a talker with "an attitude problem," and most of my teachers did not like that aspect of my personality. I spent a lot of time in the office, suspended or simply being isolated from the class. However, I excelled at being an employee, where my desire to socialize was in my favor. This got me wondering why teachers were not doing the same thing with students. Using students strong points to work with them, instead of punishing them. Around high school age, I decided that I would like to be a teacher so I could work with kids that weren't the "perfect" students and highlight their natural abilities instead of punishing them for them.

I have been a classroom teacher for the last 26 years and have loved the opportunity to work with children and help them navigate their learning environment and help them feel successful. Learning inspires me, and helps me reflect on the different opportunities that are available to us as human beings. One of the driving forces for me as a teacher has been to help guide students to see their potential and their value, and help their self-confidence grow and develop as they go through their educational journey. I have always appreciated having mentors and guides in my life to help me succeed and have wanted to be that person for the kids that I have taught. This is my 2nd year as a Learning Specialist, a job that I have spent the last 10 years preparing for, so I can work closely with students who may have either some behavioral, social or academic challenges.
