Heroin is a Schedule One Opioid Drug. This means it has NO medical benefit and puts the user at a high potential for abuse and dependency. Heroin takes the form of a white powder although many times what is sold to consumers is filled with many harmful additives which may add a brown or pink tint to the powder. This powder comes from the seed pod of the Opium Poppy plant, scientifically known as Papaver somniferum. The powder can then be injected, snorted, or smoked to enter into the user's system.

As any drug, Heroin offers its users a false sense of reality. Users hope to reduce their emotional reaction to pain artificially by taking this drug. Our brains hold large numbers of opioid receptors heavily concentrated in areas of the brain such as the limbic system, which controls our perception of happiness, relaxation, fearlessness and tolerance to pain. Heroin floods these receptors causing the user to experience a sensation of pain-free relaxation.

The use of heroin is associated with endless harmful and potentially deadly side effects, the most common being liver failure and heart disease. Other long term side effects include but are NOT LIMITED to: loss of menstrual cycle, brain damage, psychological and neurological effects, birth defects, and infectious diseases such as HIV. Fatal overdoses and overdoses suppressing the flow of oxygen to the brain causing hypoxia are also rather common and many heroin addicts are reported having "spontaneous abortions."
Along with the above description of long term effects of using heroin, there are many other short term but still life-altering side effects. These include weight loss, constipation and gastrointestinal cramping, pneumonia, and coma.
Continued use of this dangerous drug may also potential result in the collapsing of veins, infection of heart lining and valves, abscesses, kidney disease, and pulmonary complications. This horrible suffering does not stop with the discontinued use of the drug because within hours the user will feel the effects of withdraw which may continue for months. Withdraw effects include restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, cold flashes with goose bumps, and kicking movements. Some people do not survive these severe complications. As you can see, the abundance of information involving heroin involves discussing its dangerous side effects. The bad far outways what little benefit or satisfaction one may find in this drug.

Heroin leaves it mark across a wide array of cultures dating back hundreds of years. The word “Heroine” comes from the German word meaning “heroic” and the ancient Sumerians referred to the opium poppy plant used to make Heroin as the “joy plant.” Other references are made throughout history to other opioid treatments such as in Ancient Egyptian, Greek, Minoan, and Sanskrit texts.
In 1898, Bayer (a German pharmaceutical company) marketed heroin as a non addictive cough medicine making it a legal remedy for public use. The drug was also believed to treat tuberculosis and was used as a gateway drug to help ease morphine addiction.

With a large number of Heroin users across all parts of the world there is a good chance you will encounter the drug at some point in your life. It is important to be informed so you can make an educated decision and provide an adequate explanation in refusing the drug. In 2011 alone 4.2 million Americans (12 or older) tried experimenting with heroin. Current data suggests that worldwide there are around 9.2 million users. This especially effects teens and young adults as they make up the majority of heroin’s newest addicts. Many of these new addicts are also products of middle- and upper/middle- class suburban families.
