Owl Pellet

This photo was taken in class when we were doing the owl pellet lab. The owl pellet applies to environmental science because it helps scientists develop a food chain. By examining an owl pellet anyone can determine what an owl eats and the amount of food it eats. Since owls are a top predator, the pellet is helpful in filling in the bottom of the chain. Another reason that the pellet applies to environmental science is because it helps us find out specific information on the owl species like what it eats and how it regurgitates its food.

Energy Saving Light Bulb

Here is a picture of one of the many energy efficient lightbulbs I have in my house. My family switched all of our old lightbulbs to energy efficient bulbs. This applies to environmental science because by doing this it reduces the amount of greenhouse gasses going into the atmosphere. Not only did we switch the bulbs but we also conserve our energy which also applies. We do this by making sure to turn all of our light off when we leave our house. Some of the lights are on timers so that they will turn off automatically.

Palm Tree

Here is a picture of a palm tree, which is a native specie to Florida. Palm trees are also a introduced specie to Florida, brought from the Spaniards a long time ago. Palm trees can be found all over Florida, but this specific one was found in front of my house. My neighborhood is lined up with palm trees as well as most neighborhoods in Parkland. This palm tree has been at my house for over 10 years, and survived many hurricanes. It was planted before I moved to my house so my family is unsure of how it first got there. Palm trees are found in Florida mostly because their palms are salt-tolerant meaning they can survive near the many beaches Florida has.

Land Pollution

On my lawn, there was a plastic cup in one of my bushes and it has been there for quite a while. When it was garbage day a few things including that cup fell out and ended on my lawn as well as many of my neighbor's lawns. Simple things like this are land pollution, which can lead to the killing of plant life and are posing danger to local wildlife. Plastic isn't biodegradable, so its chemicals will seep underground degrading the soil and water, if it is near water. The wind picks up many plastic items and trash in my neighborhood which is very bad especially when everyone puts their trash outside. This type of land pollution is found almost everywhere and not only from wind, but from people purposely throwing their cups and wrappers on the floor which is deeply harming the environment.
