The news comes amid US warnings that a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine could be imminent. The State Department on Sunday reduced staffing at the US embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, with the departure of nonessential staff and family members out of "an abundance of caution“

Acknowledging that Ukrainians are in danger but also demonstrating that the US only saves Americans and doesn’t necessarily assist countries in any positive ways. This reminds me of Afghanistan when the Taliban initially took over once again, the US got their diplomats and troops out of Afghanistan as quick as could be and allowed Afghani people to be held captive by the Taliban.

A White House readout of the call said the leaders discussed "preparations to impose massive consequences and severe economic costs on Russia for such actions as well as to reinforce security on NATO's eastern flank."

I like that the author acknowledged Russia’s consequences if they were to invade Ukraine. It kind of makes the US seem more serious about handling this situation in a civil manner. It also demonstrates that this isn’t just some mission for US troops to partake in as a way to make the US military seem strong or powerful. I think it makes the intention of preparing troops to deploy a little more clear. If I’m correct, the US wants to help Ukraine as they are a smaller Eastern European country.

Russia has said that the US and NATO must commit to never admitting Ukraine into NATO and pull back military deployments from Eastern European counties, including Romania and Bulgaria.

It’s interesting to see Russia’s reaction to this series of events, they have to be careful in order to not threaten any nations but also they want to invade Ukraine so they are in turn threatening every European country especially those in NATO due to the US’s affiliation. The US and Russia already have an interesting history with Trump’s presidency and potential voting fraud but that’s besides te point now that Biden is in office. It does make this a little scarier being that Trump and Putin were friends. I like CNN’s article because they highlight other countries reactions to this potential war.

"The United States is deeply concerned about the current situation in Europe," Kirby said. "We remain keenly focused on Russia's unusual military activities near the Ukrainian border, including in Belarus, and consulting extensively with our transatlantic allies and partners”

This article contains mostly quotes honestly from General Kirby. The CNN article has more information relating to the actual status of the situation opposed to opinions on what will happen or The US’s standing on it.
