pages 1-31
Summary: Guy Montag is a fireman. We learn about Guy's life, his wife, and job. Guy meets Clarisse-neighbor. Clarisse is a free-thinker. Clarisse asks, "are you happy?" Clarisse disappears one day. We learn about the mechanical hound and Captain Beatty.
Mechanical hound=represents governmental control.

Discussion:
1. Will Guy Montag change his mind about book burning?
2. Why does Clarisse come to Guy Montag's house over and over?
3. Why does Guy start to feel unhappy? Someone has asked him about his true feelings and has asked him to question his existence/life/job.
4. What is discussed in page 4-7>describes first meeting between Montag and Clarisse. Montag becomes more and more interested in her. Probably because he realizes that something is missing in his life.
5. Does today's reading remind you of any real life experience?
Is "are happy" an important question to ask?

Connections:
1. Family members, people are talking less much like today's world.
2. "Firemen"'s job has changed. Have any jobs in our time changed?
-more technology oriented.
-Jobs that were more people oriented are becoming less.
3. Mildred and taking the pill. Does this relate to our time? Have our memories/knowledge started to disappear as we use more technology?
4. A more controlled world. Is our world more controlled? Why?

Summary: Captain Beatty talks to Montag about the "truth of the world". Montag asks about Clarisse. Beatty says she is dead. Beatty mentions that firemen can bring books home as long as they get rid of it in 24 hours. Mildred finds out about Montag's hidden book and tells her to read a few pages.
Discussion Questions:
A. Do you agree with what Beatty said? 55-60.
B. Why is there a rule for firemen who bring back books "unconsciously".
C. Is Mildred happy?

Connections:
-people are satisfied with simple information and brief facts.
-how are people's ideas silenced?
