Otto Dix explored the theme of the first World War. He is using the painting to reflect his experience of the conflict. You can see the exodus of soldiers at dawn (left panel), the battlefield as the place of death (central panel), the return of the warriors from the hell of battle (right panel) and the rest of the soldiers in a dugout (predella). The painting was painted in oil on wood.The special thing about this painting is that it is a Tryptychon. It is divided in 3 parts.
