Factors Affecting Leaching Process

Particle size

- The leaching rate can be increased if the particle size is small. Big particle size needs to go through the grinding process so can produce fine particle size or need help from the stirrer to increase the leaching rate for big particle size.

Solvent

- The particle need to be more soluble in the solvent compare to solute.

Temperature

- The solubility of the solute in the solvent increases with an increase in temperature. The mobility or diffusivity of the solute in the solvent increases with increase in temperature. The viscosity of the liquid decreases with an increase in temperature, this lowered viscosity helps in increased mobility of the solute through the liquid or the solvent.

Agitation

- The general effect of agitating the solid-liquid solution is that the solid-liquid mass transfer coefficient increases with an increase in agitation but care should be taken that the inert solid doesn’t get disintegrated. If most of the mass transfer resistance lies in the interior of the solid then agitation will not have much effect on the leaching process.

Surface area

Homogeneity of the carrier and solute

Microorganism activity

- Bacterial leaching is the extraction of metals from their ores using microorganisms. The most important player in the bioleaching process is Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. It is a chemoautotrophic acidophile, meaning that it obtains its energy from inorganic sources and fixes its own carbon while growing in an acidic medium. Its unique ability to oxidise ferrous to ferric, and sulphur and reduced sulphur compounds to sulphuric acid, leads to leaching of metals from their oxide and sulphide ores. Ferric sulphate is a strong oxidising agent capable of dissolving a wide range of metal sulphide minerals. Leaching brought about by ferric sulphate is termed indirect leaching because it proceeds in the absence of both oxygen and viable bacteria.

Mineralogy

- In the process of mineral leaching, the main factors affecting the leaching rate of gold ore are the concentration of cyanide and oxygen, ore properties, gold particle size, pulp pH value, slurry content, pulp concentration, leaching temperature, and mineral leaching time. Some gold-bearing ores should not be directly treated by cyanide leaching. The high content of copper, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, and other components in the ore will greatly increase the cyanide consumption or consume the oxygen in the pulp and reduce the gold leaching rate. In addition, if the carbon content in the ore is high, the carbon will adsorb the dissolved gold and lose with the tailings. At this time, the influence of harmful impurities can be eliminated by pre-oxidation roasting or flotation.

Intermediate products

- If the intermediate products help the process, it improves efficiency; but, if they attach to either of them and slow down the process, it reduces efficiency. As a result, it is dependent on the intermediate product that is produced.

Crystal structure

- Depending on the path available for the solvent to reach and dissolve the solute. Smaller crystals, for example, have a larger contact area, resulting in greater efficiency. The efficiency of similar shapes that allow for greater contact will be higher.

Introduction Membrane Separation

Petrochemical Industries (Ira)
-Olefins like ethylene and propylene are the most common chemicals used in the petrochemical industry to make polyolefins like polyethylene, polypropylene, styrene, ethyl benzene, and ethylene dichloride, acrylonitrile, and isopropanol. The separation of the olefin from the equivalent paraffin on a wide scale is a crucial step in the production of olefins. Furthermore, dehydrogenation, oxidative coupling of methane, steam reforming of methane, and water gas shift reaction are essential in the petrochemical sector. Membrane gas separation is appealing because of its simplicity and cheap energy cost, but it has one fundamental flaw: the selectivity and permeability are inversely proportional. This difficulty is solved by nanocomposite membranes, which enhance selectivity and permeability at the same time.
-The advantages of nanocomposites are high removal capacity, operational flexibility, and cost efficiency Synthetic membranes have been investigated and commercialized for industrial and residential applications for the past two decades.

Wastewater Treatment (Kai)
-Industrial wastewater has a complicated composition, a significant change in water quality, and a harmful impact. The goal of wastewater treatment is to eliminate contaminants and ensure that they fulfill discharge or recovery standards. In the meanwhile, the separated wastewater should be properly resourced or treated. When faced with a complicated composition and defined treatment goals, a single membrane technique or traditional technology is insufficient to address the treatment needs, thus an integrated membrane method combining traditional treatment methods and membrane methods is frequently utilized. Ceramic microfiltration membrane technology and nanofiltration membrane technology are two research directions in integrated membrane technology.
- Ceramic microfiltration membrane technology has high chemical stability and can withstand organic solvent and acid-base corrosion; it has a stable mechanical structure and strong anti-pollution performance; it can be cleaned and regenerated, and it can adapt to the harsh environment of industrial wastewater treatment.
- Nanofiltration technology provides the benefits of low operating pressure, ease of operation and control, and the elimination of the need for extra chemical reagents in the treatment process, resulting in no secondary pollution.
