Kennedy first involved the United States in Vietnam in an attempt to stop the spread of Communism from North Vietnam to South Vietnam.

This attempt to stop the spread stemmed from the growing Domino Theory, which meant if one country fell to Communism, the surrounding countries were bound to fall.

Kennedy would launched the Bay of Pigs Operation, an attack on Cuba that failed miserably, and led to growing issues in the Executive Branch

Kennedy never sent troops to Vietnam but sent thousands of advisors.

Kennedy would also support the overthrow of the oppressive South Vietnamese government, as the United States' corrupt allies in the South were causing more issues than the Communists from the North.

President Johnson took over after Kennedy's assassination and would take the first militaristic actions against North Vietnam when he launched air strikes after the The Gulf of Tonkin Incident in 1964, an "attack" by the North on a United States naval vessel. However, this attack may have not happened as many conflicting accounts were told as the war continued.

Johnson would receive complete power over the war effort from Congress after the Gulf of Tonkin Incident.

President Johnson was more concerned about his Domestic policy rather than his foreign policy, so often times the Vietnam War was a second priority for Johnson.

Johnson would deploy the first combat troops in 1965

Johnson would stop all bombing campaigns in the hope that North Vietnam would also take de-escalation measures, around this same time Johnson would announce that he would not be running for re-election.
