Nathaniel Hawthorne is considered one of the most prolific symbolists in American Literature and this is evident in the Scarlet Letter. In the Scarlet Letter, the night time, and more specifically the darkness of the night symbolizes many things. For example, the darkness is used to symbolism the concealment of Pearls' father. The night in Chapter 16, when Hester and Dimmesdale meet in the forest, symbolizes the hidden love between the two. Another example of the night used as concealment is when Dimmesdale stands on the scaffold at midnight and confesses his sin to no one. Even in the end, Dimmesdale's and Hester's grave are in presented to us in darkness.

"Hester, that wear the scarlet letter openly upon your bosom! Mine burns in secret! Thou little knowest what a relief it is, after the torment of a seven years' cheat, to look into an eye that recognizes me for what I am!" (Hawthorne 188)

"To Hester's eye, the Reverend Mr. Dimmesdale exhibited no symptom of positive and vivacious suffering, except that, as little Pearl had remarked, he kept his hand over his heart. "(Hawthorne 185)

On page 155 a sexton tells the minister how he found a glove and it belongs to the minister. The sexton then says how a minister does not need a glove if he is all good and pure.
