-The tradition of Vietnamese people giving small children li-xi all started from the lore that follows. Once upon a time, living in a peach blossom tree in the East were all "evil spirits" on Earth. While being kept inside the tree and controlled by deities, they always tried to escape from the deities and tried to harm people in any sort of way. On New Year's Eve, when deities meet up in the heavens, Tuy would appear(one of the evil spirits), touching small children’ head to make them burst into cries and get sicknesses. Thus, the whole family had to stay awake all night to protect the children from Tuy.

However, some Deities while once stopping by a village had turned themselves into gold coins. Parents covered those coins in red cloth and placed under a child’s pillow. Later, when Tuy came, the coins bedazzled and drove it away. Good news quickly spread out all over the country, and from that time on, the Vietnamese culture have had the tradition of giving small children lucky money in red envelope on the first day of Chinese New Years(Lunar New Years).

https://www.vietnamonline.com/tet/li-xi-lucky-money-for-tet.html

-There are lots of traditions that people follow when it comes to Chinese New Year.

-To start, people usually clean their houses thoroughly the week before Lunar New Year as a way to bid farewell for last year and to welcome the next year.

-People then like to decorate their homes and buildings according to what zodiac sign is presented at that time. For example, since 2018 is the year of the dog, there should be similar decorations of dogs.

-Families like to also have a reunion dinner and it's usually thought to be the most important meal of the year and families usually eat fish, dumplings, and spring rolls.

-Firecrackers are also a way to celebrate the new year and it's usually set to the public mostly. However some still do it privately at homes(like me) but make sure the police doesn't catch you doing it.

-Lastly but definitely not the least, new year gifts and red envelopes. This is one of the more popular traditions and usually the older individuals give "li-xi" or red envelopes to the younger ones as a way to hope the young for the best. I wish I was still young.

https://www.chinahighlights.com/travelguide/special-report/chinese-new-year/
