How were Robert Smallbones and Feng-Shan Ho able to make a difference? What was the role of ingenuity? What was the role of circumstance? What other factors played a role in their choices and in the results of those choices? (11 points)

Robert Smallbones and Feng-Shan 🤬 were able to make a difference because they developed a program which allowed Jewish people, who were in concentration camps, the ability to apply for a visa to either Britain or Japan to escape Germany and wait for their turn to be able to go to the United States for refuge. The role of ingenuity is one that developed a program, that wasn't around at the time even though the United States were allowing Jewish immigrants, the Smallbones Scheme was a intermittent program that would allow the Jewish people the ability to wait, in a safe area, but without work and the promise, on their part, to not become a pay issue. The role of circumstance was that the United States could only allow a certain amount of immigrants in at a time which was 2% of the current living population. This was a factor in the rate of which people could be accepted for a visa based off the Smallbones Scheme to prevent flooding of immigrants. Some other factors that played a role were the citizen of said countries not finding out about it to reduce backlash and the fact that the countries could only accept so many people that they had to accept applications slowly.

Rob Smart

Robert Smallbones and Feng-Shan 🤬 made a difference by getting as many Jews out of Germany as possible by granting them visas. After Kristallnacht, These two individuals disobeyed the orders of their superiors and tried to save as many lives as possible. Although limited in the amount of visas grantable per year, tens of thousands of lives were saved. Something that baffled me was the drive that Smallbones had. He mentions that he would work on average 18 hours a day to make sure the visas had their signatures and how he felt guilty for getting two hours of sleep. Because of this drive, more lives were saved.

Sergio Aureli
