A safe and more culturally welcoming space with its own access was an ideal way to begin to bridge that divide for some people. Slowly these have eroded in many sites across the VSB. The spaces are locked more often than they are open. "VSB policy say we can't" is the answer to why aren't they open. Furniture is often old and dirty. Staffing has been reduced to levels unable to support the functioning of these important spaces. In its final steps, the rooms are being repurposed as "there is no one available to staff it so lets repurpose for something else". The cyclical destruction and or appropriation of Sacred Spaces is just outright WSC.

Why does this need to be discussed behind closed doors before students or other teachers hear of this disagreement? This is written in our Union code of conduct. What would happen if we worked together, sharing students and teaching collectively? It might be uncomfortable when we disagreed. 

Individualism. Perfectionism and Only one Right Way: While locked away in our rooms we don't get the opportunity to compare our work honestly and to learn from each other. The fear of judgement means we share our successes far more than our failures, and create a false image of "Best Practice" which is utterly impossible to achieve, as it is really the best of many many many peoples gifted teaching, not the best that one can do.

Power Hoarding: I invite us to imagine sharing our responsibilities to our students, rather than hoarding them. I invite us to bravely share our teaching as an act of community, rather than as a labour performed in secret.

The experience today informs me about what questions we ask students at school to consider.  I want to learn to ask better ones as I learn about teaching.  For example, do I ask students how they honor their home or their environment, how they honor culture, honor ancestry, or  further or promote or protect their heritage?  Do those questions fit into academic life and academic success?  Do I ask if students are strong in their own identity?  Why is that not acknowledged in school?  Are we creating leaders and whole human beings?  Is that what graduation is or what it should be if it isn't?  How effective am I or how effective are students at helping others?  Is that rated?  Is every student voice being heard?  Are the interests and strengths of each student being encouraged and recognized and their challenges supported?  Are students and teachers grounded in their culture?  Do teachers and students have a culture?  What is that? Are students silenced?  What kind of knowledge do students have or do they want to have?  What stories are essential to know? What power, rights, and responsibilities do students have?  Do students and teachers learn to cultivate positive relationships with diverse people?  Who are the people at the school? Who are the people connected to?  Where are they from? Are these questions addressed in school? For example, if this school system is putting Indigenous students at disadvantage, there are no specific policies put in place to specifically protect Indigenous students. Every change in the school system has to be approved by all the echelons. 

I also see white supremacy entrenched in the older white teachers who make racist, problematic comments and think that it's okay because they've always done it. I see white supremacy reflected in my colleagues when they are constantly centering their own experiences when we talk about racism/anti-racism.

Are we creating leaders and whole human beings? Is that what graduation is or what it should be if it isn't? How effective am I or how effective are students at helping others? Is that rated? Is every student voice being heard? Are the interests and strengths of each student being encouraged and recognized and their challenges supported? Are students and teachers grounded in their culture? Do teachers and students have a culture? What is that? Are students silenced? What kind of knowledge do students have or do they want to have? What stories are essential to know? What power, rights, and responsibilities do students have? Do students and teachers learn to cultivate positive relationships with diverse people? Who are the people at the school? Who are the people connected to? Where are they from? Are these questions addressed in school? Do we give people the space and energy and time to learn to be themselves? Or do I just give an experience that is distant from them that impedes them from this kind of education? Instead we are told we have to let them mature and revisit when they’re older, that they may “grow out of it”.   The reality of this practice means that many children get further and further behind because they don’t have access to additional supports and teachers do their best but often can’t get to these students as often as we’d like because we are struggling to deal with extreme behaviours and dangerous behaviors that are often also under supported. In my daily practice as a teacher, I often find myself questioning whether I should be doing what is expected, or, doing what I truly believe is important. I find there is systemic pressure to be a certain way as a teacher which sometimes conflicts with what I believe is a priority. I also believe that caregivers can sometimes propagate this sentiment as they too are in a white supremacy culture.  I think its really important to look within...I still feel in my heart a strong dislike of compartmentalizing humans into "races".  I really recomend a book called "The Mismeasure of Man" by Stephen J. Gould.  It opened my eyes into the origins of the 'race' concept and IQ testing, treatment of minorities and the mismeasure of white european males.

Why was SS11 as a required course condensed into the SS10 course when that year and age is SUCH an important time for them to put the pieces together ??? There is way too much content, and too many concepts for students to try and understand when their development (in Gr 10) is really not prepared for all the information. 
A real disservice to their learning and our ability as educators to actually help them get a more thorough understanding. 
Seriously. If ever we needed more time for 15/16/17 year olds to have more conversation and deeper understanding about their world and each other, it is now. 
Yet, in the past few years a lot of crucial learning about injustice has been crammed into SS 10. Many  students who would really benefit from taking an extra year of facilitated SS learning (SS11) along with their personal and social development but do not. They take one more SS course, under-prepared and not at a stage where they can actually LEARN the deeply necessary lessons. ]]> 2020-12-02 03:02:38 UTC https://padlet.com/trussleadership/mnqnkex0qup6oy5c/wish/978442602 https://padlet.com/trussleadership/mnqnkex0qup6oy5c/wish/984214383 Anti-racist training like this one can't be a one-off performative gesture, it must be part of an ongoing program that not only revisits the theme but pushes school communities to come up with goals and ways to evaluate progress.  I remember when SMART goals were all the rage and we painstakingly had to come up with and submit departmental goals.  We should be doing that with anti-racism as well.  To not do so is performative.

Police has no place in schools.  There has to be a collective reckoning with the racist and violent history of policing in this country that continues to today.  As teachers we may or may not have witnessed problems involving police in schools.  But it's not about what we know, anti-racist and trauma-informed practice requires us to see the world through different perspectives -- those of IBPOC students and communities.  Students come from families, and families are products of history that form society at large -- many students come to school with traumatic experience and memories already etched in their young lives.  WSC tells us to ignore and sideline those experiences, by choosing to not see them.  


]]> 2020-12-03 15:45:31 UTC https://padlet.com/trussleadership/mnqnkex0qup6oy5c/wish/984214383 https://padlet.com/trussleadership/mnqnkex0qup6oy5c/wish/984321492 As a POC and a teacher, I must stand in solidarity with Black and Indigenous communities and do right by them.  WSC has entrenched its divide-and-conquer method of control in many of us, to make us fear repercussions for speaking out, believing in our superiority over other BIPOC people, that we have "made it" -- whether it refers to a college education, professional job, property, or some status that we hold at work.  

If we value those things more than speaking truth to power, then we are racist.  We can in fact be worse than the white oppressors we have internalized.
