Some courses I would like to see are at least anything within the mental health field. It would allow students who are open and interested to learn more about certain mental health issues and explore more in depth of what they course they choose. Having some choices with having them as half a credit and either college credit or a regular high school credit would be helpful as well in case any students want to try and earn college credit if they also plan to have this as a future career, too. Another course I would love to see, that would be directed more towards seniors, is something like a tax class. It would help teach students ,who are willing to learn, how to do their taxes and important documents but in scenarios since I know lots of young adults to older adults don't have the time or aren't sure where to start, so having someone available to students to teach them about how to do certain important things we need to know as adults would help VERY much.

A cell phone protocol for MacArthur that I believe could be effective is having about 5 minutes in the beginning of class on their phones to send last minute texts or do whatever they need, then once the 5 minutes are up, they could either turn in their phones to the teacher or, depending on the teacher themselves, put up their phones in their bag till the end of class comes up. Of course, there would be some consequences if the student(s) don't listen to the rules but if they at least have a designated time to use their phone then maybe it could help teach the student to get off their phone less and concentrate more into their work. And, as I said before, if the teacher allows or doesn't allow the phones to be used, or not used, in class then it would be up to them, as well.

Phones should be a tool. Phones should be understood in class as a tool. Teachers that show respect to the students in their classes, tend to get respect from the students in return. Kids should get to keep their phones and if it becomes an issue, the teacher should have the right to take it for the period.

I believe when it comes to phones we should maybe have a classroom ban but not a campus ban. So like Churchill it's not allowed during class but Mather during lunch and passing period and it can stay on the student instead of being in a phone pouch or in the backpack. It's also about the boundaries that students and teachers have with each-other in the classroom. When it comes to the courses MacArthur offers we should keep most of our courses due to the fact the wide selection we have at our school can help students find what they want to do in their life and outside of high school.

Phones - Build relationships with teachers. Teachers shouldn't belittle students, instead respect them like peers. With a mutually respectful relationship, phone issues should dwindle. - Ben

I think for the phones issue I believe that if they are seen by a teacher they should be taken up unless the phones are being used for the lesson. To build respect by teachers they could talk to us like people instead of as if we were toddlers.

And for the courses I think we should keep the electives that can become a college major and or a job.

Phones should be placed in the phone cubbies if a student is repeatedly disrespecting the teachers phone policy. Otherwise, it should be placed at the bottom of the bag. Or maybe, students can have it face down on the desk and only use it in an emergency. Face down can help students feel a sense of ownership and teachers regulate the phone policy since it’s right in front of them.

For phones I'd say that the teacher should establish rules in their classroom in a rather nice yet firm manner to make sure the point gets across to the students or at least establish a rule that is roughly saying that phones should be put up until they are done talking. There should be respect between both teacher and student so it is best that the teacher doesn't be rude about it unless the student becomes an issue, APs/Admins should respect the policy in the teacher's classroom. Another idea would to establish a rule across campus for every classroom that would include things such as first 5 minutes you can use your phone and the last 5 minutes or individual work you can use your phone as long as the work is done.

For the phones I would like to suggest that week not only have the teachers build healthy relationships with students but also have a set expectation for there classroom such as your phones should be put away while I'm talking,working with you,and during quizzes and test but Whlie were in busy work we can have our phones

I think it should depend on the course you are taking and the teachers own opinion on the cell phone.If you are done on your work then I think there should be no reason that if you are done with your work then you should be able to go on your phone.About the courses we should keep the course that feed into careers. Like teachers shouldn’t have to teach a class they know nothing about.

To gain more control over the phone policy. There needs to be more trust established in the classroom, and all throughout school as well.

To gain this trust, teachers with the support of admin, need to set clear boundaries, when school begins, of their own exceptions of their classroom environment. This trust will build respect for the teachers but also the students.

With respect and trust, policy’s can be set in place, that will be more likely to be followed.

The policy’s that come to my mind first are…

“give a lil get a lil”

The rules will stay consistent with the “bell to bell”

Only being..in classrooms, students will be able keep their phones, perhaps even use their phone as a tool, but only with the up keep of their work/ instructions by the teachers.

Teachers will always set their boundaries/exceptions/ and Lessons instructions at the beginning of every class.

Making it clear to students how long, and how much work they’ll be getting into for that day. (maybe even Planning ahead for weeks/ months).

With these clear instructions of when phone time will be available, students can learn patience, and establish respect with their teachers rules.

With the building of trust, and patience.. I believe student will find genuine interest in their teachers lessons. Find intrigue in the subjects, and rely on their teachers for information/ tools rather than their phones.

Now these expectations won’t happen at the snap of the finger, trust, responsibility, and maturity takes time. Growing kids take time.

So enforcing a strict “bell to bell” policy without the establishment of why these rules are being set in the first place, will only enrage kids. More rebellion will build, and the point to gain respect is gone.

So gradually enforcing a policy that builds clear no phone boundaries, can ease students into the policy’s.

-Phones will be available during passing periods and lunch.

-Phones will be unavailable when Teachers explain their lesson plans.

-Phones will be unavailable when teachers are giving their lessons.

-Phones will be unavailable when using the restroom

-Phones will regain their availability, when students have complied with the rules, and finish their work.
