(P.36 l.5) the description includes a ‘boathouse’, ‘trees, green banks’ and ‘old dormitories’ (p.40).

-why did Offred ignore the Church? 
-> is there a reason ? - maybe a Trauma? - no religious connection ?
-she asks Olfgen about the paintings in the school -> maybe she doesn’t know the inside


When they continue walking on they pass a Wall.Offred describes it as „plain but handsome“ (p.37 l,55-56).As if she is gettin postitve qualities from the Wall ( because of the Word „handsome“)

-Why does she call it „plain but handsome“  ?


In Chapter 8 when they go to another Shopping trip they see two new Bodies described as :

„‘have purple placard hung around their necks: Gender Treachery. Their bodies still wear the Guardian uniforms.’ (P.49 l.7-8).

-Why does Offred say that the two bodies probably we’re caught together ? - can she detect that their bodies were hung up only because of the „Gender Treachery“ -is she trying to talk about the discrimination in Gilead?

Is the commander planning to rape her ? Or maybe he sees her true rebellious character ( of Offred) and sees it as a Threat?

I think at First gilead would be seen as discriminative against women but I actually think it's the men. They are not allowed to look them in the face, talk to them etc but that also seems to have to do something with their class....

"Angel makers, they used to call them: or was that something else?
Angel makers is a term used in Europe and America for centuries meaning 'killers', and in this context especially those who induce abortions in pregnant women. 
"The football stadium is down there too where they hold the Men's salvagings."
Salvagings are here the practice of public executions on most likely men that due to their beliefs or acts were conflicting with Gilead's policies (for example rape). They are then hung on The wall.
Actual meaning -> the rescue of a ship and its cargo from loss at sea; the property saved in such a way; the act of saving anything from a wreck, fire, etc.
Ofglen and Offred stand to look at the bodies. The bodies hang for people to look at them. Ofglen says the bags over their heads are the worst because they make them look like scarecrows or dolls and like something is put in there.

In the church are paintings "of woman in long sombre dresses, their hair covered by white caps, and of upright men, darkly clothed and unsmiling. Our ancestors" 
-> This is referring to the puritans
The Puritans were members of a religious reform movement known as Puritanism that arose within the Church of England in the late 16th century.
They wanted to purify their national church by eliminating every shred of Catholic influence. The puritan fathers also ran oppressive theocracies.

And therefore I think she knew that both of them were caught together. I think, because of the time, gender treachery was such a big nogo and reason more than enough to hang someone. Woman were there to give birth, men should only see woman as attractive and the other way round. I think woman that were able to give birth were something 'holy' even though they were kept like slaves.
