My colonial experience of a day. I started the day by waking up and making my bed. Then I went out to the dining hall to eat breakfast. Later after freshening up I went out to the fields with my father and start gathering the crops for future meals. Today I visited the Church and after that we came home and I learned some new things like new words. Dinner time came shortly after then I ate . At the end of a long day of working, traveling, and learning. It is time to rest.

I slowly stir to a state of consciousness and slowly open my bleary eyes and make my way down to the kitchen. After my breakfast, which had been prepared by a slave in the kitchen, I continue on to church, where we perform our usual sermons and such. Afterwards, I visit my father's blacksmith shop, where I help to sweep and scrub the floor, and continue to do so for a few hours until the laborious task is finally completed, and I run like the wind towards the designated spot where my mates and I usually play. It is a rather enjoyable, yet predictable afternoon, and I play the mandala, (which father says will improve my counting skills) with a resentful heart, and then switch to more enjoyable games, such as the hoop and stick. Finally, to conclude the day, I return home and quickly eat my supper and sleep soundly, awaiting the sun to rise once more.

I was abruptly woken up by my younger sibling screaming for me to help make breakfast and I knew that if i didn't get up that instant I would be in big trouble so I headed downstairs to make some cornbread. After serving and eating breakfast we headed to the living room to get ready for school, our mother was our teacher but she hasn't woken up yet so we waited around ten minutes until my sister started yelling for her and she came downstairs gracefully. after school we helped sweep, wash the floor and other chores. after all that "hard work" mama let us outside to play mandala and other games with the neighborhood kids. she says mandala is a great way to learn how to count and have fun at the same time. after all that fun we returned home for supper and headed straight to bed because boy were we tired.

I woke up in my not so comfortable bed. I knew that there would be the same old boring chores to do ahead of me. I got up out of bed and went down to the kitchen. My mom was already preparing breakfast for our master. I went outside to get the water from the well to give to our master. Once I got the water I went into the house and started to scrub the floor and make it look very clean to impress my master. I did these boring chores for most of my life so I started to get good at it. After an uneventful 8 hours of cleaning I finally had my own spare time and played some games with my friends.

After falling off the bed onto the cold, wooden floor, I creep over to the kitchen, grab the water pails, and go to the well. I want to get the water before anybody else wakes up, so that I can have time to myself. After filling the pails and bringing them back to the house, I sit at the bench and pull out a book. The other family members wake up and get right to their morning chores. I eat the breakfast that has been provided to me by my family's workers and then the family sets off to the local church. After we come back, we relax. We eat outside and enjoy Sunday, the day that we don't have to work (I'm assuming that since they are Christian, Sunday=Sabbath :D) My siblings, our neighbors, and I go outside to play truck ball (which, by the way, is really hard to play in a dress) and mandala, which I admit I am rather good at. After that, we all come back inside and refresh ourselves with a splash of cold water. The neighbors leave, and my siblings and I clean ourselves up. We eat dinner with the family, bathe, then go to bed, ready to work the following day (Monday).

I wake up, hearing the sounds of the crickets chirping on the other side of my wall. I get up and dress as quickly as possible. I hear Mother calling me down to breakfast to eat the bread and eggs that she has prepared. Father owns a small wheat farm in the back and he likes to make fresh bread. Although it is labor intensive, my tastebuds do not disagree. Mother calls me to the study room, where paper and pens are set up for today’s learning. I learn how to simplify expressions and learn my 10 word vocabulary list. Mother insists on adding bible studies to the agenda, but I know most of it already. I read the book of Genesis for what it seems like the tenth time and I rush of to the garden. I see the hills that roll past our fence and the afternoon sun shines down on it. I scurry towards the horse’s stable to check on Molly, the horse. Father says I cannot ride him for I am too small and too young, but I know that if I take care of Molly, one day I will be able to ride her as well. I feed, bathe and groom Molly, as I watch the sun set. I go harvest the corn I was supposed to get 2 hours ago and I sprint back to the house. Mother yells at me, because a girl of my age should always walk with poise. I apologize and set the corn on the table. I sit down to eat my porridge and I walk back to my room, about to bathe and get ready for bedtime.

I worked with my mom in the kitchen and today she taught me another one of her recipes that I will also get to pass down when I get older. I wanted to finish as quickly as possible so I could go outside and play with the others.

As the dirty sheets stuck to my body as if a second skin, my eyes blink to have a sense of consciousness of my surroundings before folding the sheets of my bed as an attempt to do something productive. A slave assists me into my outfit, leading me to the food she has prepared for me before any departure to the church with our family. Nodding at her as a silent “thank you” and dismissal of her presence, I swiftly finish my breakfast to venture onto the grounds and preach at the church. I give some alms to the donation boxes before proceeding to my father’s recently prevalent apothecary, noticing the filth compiling on the shelves. I quickly fetch a handful of slaves in the shop to aid my efforts of cleanliness, supervising each individuals work for a few hours. Releasing them after a few hours when the laborious task seemed to be properly complete, I sit and sighed alone. I have grown out of the toys previously gifted to me and playing outside was not in my particular interests as I only really spend my time learning only small bits of literacy and math to maintain the household. I manage the shop for a while, talk to some customers and acquaintances, and clean up once more. Though, the sun finally falls, resulting in my father needing to close shop and for the both of us to conclude our days by eating and sleeping without another thought.

I stare up at the uneven roof of our cabin, and move around on my uncomfortable bed, trying to get some more sleep before my chores begin. After a few unsuccessful attempts, I decide to get up, get dressed, and walk outside to see oatmeal ready for my family and George, our "slave". Although we don't agree that slaves should be treated poorly, we still have one, though my parents say to George, for that is his name, and that he should be like a brother to me. The rest of my family is already at the table, waiting for me so we can start eating. I greet my parents, nod to George, and sit down to eat. After eating, George and I get up and walk to the fields, getting ready to harvest the crops. We have been blessed with a good harvest this year, but it will last longer if we can finish harvesting the crops today. It is long, grueling work. The weather seems to be getting hotter and drier each day, but we both know the faster we finish our chores the more time we have to ourselves. After what seems like forever, we finally finish. We carry back many buckets full of corn, wheat, and other crops which names I have yet to learn. After cleaning ourselves up, we head to the town, where my father works as a carpenter. When he sees us arrive, he nods, and leaves, to start chopping more lumber for the shop. Meanwhile, I run the tiny store, while George is in the back continuing to make more items to sell. My father comes back later, and we come home for our studies. I can see the sun is barely midway in the sky, and I feel proud of myself. I have completed the two toughest chores in barely 6 hours. As George and I continue home, I see some other kids playing in distance, they stare at us, a white and a black walking together. Some stare in disgust, while others start walking towards us menacingly. George looks at me, and starts walking towards them. I silently plead him to ignore them, and continue, be he seems to tell me that he must do this. He calmly walks up to them, and punches one of them in the face, the others back away, and George walks back, knowing what punishment might happen later. We come home, our mother waiting for us so she can begin her lesson. She sits us down, and gives me a passage and some math problems to do, while she helps George with reading and writing. The passage was easy, but the problems were difficult. After finishing, I wait for George to finish, so we can play hoop and stick. After a couple of minutes of a boring game, me and George decide to spar with swords for a bit. My father was teaching some basic skills from when he was part of the British military, and wanted to pass his skills to us. So we sparred, and I did move my father forbids us to do, but won the match. We come back inside, just when my father came home. We sit at the table, ready to eat the roast chicken at the table. After eating, I clean myself up, and lie in my bed. After waking up from trying to sleep, I see a light in the room we use to learn. I walk outside and see my brother, studying the English language. At that moment, something changed in me. I walk up to him to tell him that he could sleep in my bed. He thanks and promptly enters my room to sleep. I take the floor, which seems more comfortable, close my eyes, and go to sleep.

Rubbing my sleepy eyes, I walk towards the well with a bucket. The air is misty and cool. I reach gather water into the bucket and splash a ladle full onto my face. the water feels cold, but refreshing as I feel fully waken. I walk back towards the house deciding what to make with my mother for breakfast. I put out the breakfast as my brother gets ready for school as I wonder how school is really like. Lost in thought my brother scares me and rushes out the house knowing he is late for school.

I turn over to my side, hoping to find a comfortable spot on the bed, my eyes blurred. With my grace and luck, I manage to slam my whole face onto the wooden splintered wall. Startled, I sat up - my nose numb. I sigh with relief as my face returned back to its original state, preparing to sink back into my cocoon of warmth. I finally got comfortable, only to realize that I must complete my chores in order to avoid a scolding from Mother. My feet stroking the cold hard floor, I tip-toed out of the house to bring back two buckets of water from the well. I carry one to the stables where I refill the horses' trough. Father's white stallion is gone, meaning he probably left for work (My older brother John probably tagged along as well). Only a mare and her child remain, approaching to drink the cool liquid. Using the second bucket, I scrub the floors. Exhausted I head on over to the kitchen to grab a loaf of bread. As I bite into the soft dough, I notice out of the corner of my eye, Patricia. She is one of the three slaves that work for Father and Mother. I greet her cheerfully since she is always nice to me, and proceed to help her with the dishes. Mother calls me over, and I rush towards her, only to trip and tear my dress. She glares at me with disapproval. Mother sews the tear and begins to teach me how to make a new dress. I began practicing, the result? Horrific. Mother tells me that the dress I made looks like a pile of rags and that I should use them to scrub the floor. I nod and begin cleaning the floor. She sighs and tells me to get up and practice two hours of bible study because I was not "holy enough." We continued to study Math and English together until Father and John got home. I ran out to play hoop and stick with my brother (in which I failed) while Mother and Patricia prepared dinner. John and I exchanged stories for the day (father taught him how to fix a broken gun) while we waited for dinner. Father called us in for dinner and we hurried in for some meat stew; warm to the touch of our lips. After that I washed up and collapsed onto my "well-made" bed. I sighed, it is going to be another long day tomorrow.

As I wake up at 8 AM to the ruckus of busy people working for the day, I imagine what life would be like back at home. Today is another day of labor as a colonist. I start my day off by waking up my father. He tells me to make my food, so I do. To please him, I make both my food and his, then I set off into the corn field. I gather the corn that I know is ripe, and start to shell them(shelling corn is when you use a tool to rip off the edible part of corn, or the seeds). Once I stop working, which seemed like around two hours, I headed off to church. There, I met up with my friends, and I decide to play around with them. "Father, may I go play with my friends?" I ask. He agreed. I play with my friends until about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Then, I help my father with his work, which is farming. At about 1:30 PM, I eat lunch. Lunch is so good these days! Today, I get to eat jerky with spices! This is my FAVORITE meal. Unfortunately, now I have to do more work. It is the second time of 3 times that I have to pluck goose feathers this year. Honestly, I dislike this job, for I always get scratches on my leg. Yes, yes, finally! Dinner time! Sadly, Mum died about 3 years ago... This life is hard, everyone. Sometimes, you don't get what you want. As I pray, I hope that the Lord gave Mum the Paradise she deserved. Then, when I finish my dinner(a platter of beef, corn, and appetizers), I brush my teeth and head off to my bed. Goodnight.

Light slowly started to flood into my room, changing my feeling of bliss, into a feeling of irritation. Knowing that there was no way to slowly sink back into sleep, I assumed a vertical position and stepped onto the cold and hard wooden floor. I slipped into decent clothes to wear for the day, and made my bed as I do every day. I crept downstairs, to find my family sitting at the breakfast table. I sit down to join my family as well. Once we had completed our morning meal, mother calls to the slave to take our plates. Soon after, we head to church. Afterwards, we head home.
I begin my ascending journey to my room in my attic, but my mother's voice seems to stop me. She reminds me that I need to do my chores. With a feeling of reluctancy, I head to the kitchen to make sure that the slaves are on task, as well as help prep for the evening meal. Finally in the evening before supper, I head outside to play a game of mandala and hoop and stick. Mother calls me in for dinner, and afterwards I retire to my room for the day, not ready for the challenges of tomorrow.

I slowly open my weary eyes to the sound of roosters crowing noisily outside the house. I moaned and used a pillow to block out the morning sounds, only to result in my head getting slammed to the wooden bed. I finally rose from my bed, already in a bad mood, not wanting to even tidy up my blankets. I stepped of the bed and winced as the cold floor felt as though it was freezing my foot. I walked out to the hall of the kitchen, seeing food on the breakfast table. I sat down to eat, while our house servant was rushing back and forth to prepare food for the rest of the family. I finally finished and left the house to begin my chores. I grabbed the nearest broom and dustpan, sweeping every area of the house floor. I mindlessly continued to clean the house until it was dinnertime. I hadn't had anytime to play with my friends at all. I was thoroughly disappointed and I decided I didn't care anymore after standing up to stretch my sore and stiff back. I quickly wolfed down the rest of my dinner, which was composed of poor culinary skills and bland ingredients. I ran as fast as I could to my bedroom, changed into my night clothes, and fell asleep the instant I shut my eyes. I slept soundly on the hard mattress of my bed, ready for a new day of work.

After making my bed, I visited the well to get a bucket of water to scrub the floors. I then headed to my apprenticeship at the blacksmith shop with my father. I also helped sweep and clean there. When I finished with the tasks for the day, I headed over to play with a group of the other kids. I practiced my counting with this game called mancala. We used stones and beads to play the game for a few hours until I had to return home for supper. After supper, I was tucked in by mother and went to sleep, excited to do the same thing again the next day.

I woke up on a bright Sunday morning at dawn and headed down the creaky stairs that led to the kitchen. Our slave had already started preparing our meal, but I went over to help anyways. My mother and father had come down the stairs and shortly after we began eating our breakfast so that we would have time to get ready and go to church. The church was very hot and sticky because there were so many people. I kept squirming around in my seat until the woman next to me gently slided over on the bench and glared. The service began, and I started to tune out all the words in order to mentally escape the claustrophobic environment. It was time to leave, but I was still daydreaming until I heard my mother's harsh voice telling me to leave. The ride home was dreary, but I was looking forward to playing in the garden; I thought that maybe I could even make a braid crown. Sundays were the days I could finally be free of my family's harsh rules and tiring work, it is the only thing that keeps me sane.

I had worked the butter churn with mother until my arms had felt like they would fall out. I massaged my sore arms and climbed down the ladder to the kitchen to start a new day. Mother gave us freshly baked bread with the butter that I had churned yesterday. "Good morning mother, Good morning father, good morning Mary, Ann, Luke, and Jane." I greeted my family. After breakfast, Luke went to help father guide the slaves in the field and I got up to do the daily morning chores with Mary, as Ann watched baby Jane. I look out the window and see Abram out in the fields, working hard in the sun, never getting break to even get a drink of water. I wonder what it would be like to be one of fathers slaves. I sigh and return back to my work.

I ran out to the well, my bare feet thudding on the wet grass. The sky was still dark but I hurried, knowing Master would scold me if he were awake. Afterwards, I quickly gathered eggs to prepare breakfast and went back inside. The sun was peeking out from the hills on the horizon when the plates were perfectly placed on the wooden table. I rushed to Master's child's [Miss] room to wake her. Miss startled but calmed down once she saw it was only me. Miss is my only friend, but Master does not like it when I talk to Miss. I knew I would not be invited to eat breakfast, so I ran to another room to scrub the floor.

My Dearest Eliza,
Today had seemed like a day as uneventful as others. I had woken up to the sound of our slaves rushing around in the kitchen preparing a meal. This wasn't really surprising and I walked downstairs only to hear the sound of my mother discussing something with my father. "How do you think she will react, after all she was grumpy just a few days ago." I instantly stopped where I was and listened because I was naturally curious. "Speaking of her, where is she?" I reluctantly appeared before them and got ready to eat. The rest of the day was as dull as you would have expected it to be. However, we did get to go to Church and preform our prayers. On Sundays, we kids get a little slack and are allowed an hour of free play. I run play hoops with myself wishing for the hundredth time that I was with company. My mother called me in to finish my chores and with a heavy heart I did. After what seemed like years but what was really a few hours, we settled for dinner. I immediately noticed my mother and father glancing at each other and I silently screamed in my head as I wanted to know why. After dinner, right as I was about to bed my parents confronted me. My father said, "Now we now you have been lonely lately being the only young girl in our neighborhood and..." "What your father is trying to say is, that you are going to be a big sister." my mother said. I immediately screeched in joy and thought of all the fun I was going to have with my future little brother or sister. I went to bed that day, joy filling my heart, anticipation for the days to come. Oh Eliza, I hope you are in town soon as you will see the excitement in my eyes.
With much love,
Kitty

My bed had never felt so soft before. Normally I hated getting out of bed because of how much it felt like a hay bale, but ever since my mom bought a slave, things have never been the same. My eyes still felt like I was continually being punched in the face and I had sworn that today was Wednesday, but I guess it was only an illusion. My mom yelled at me to come downstairs, describing the various chores I sought to never do. I rolled down the stairs, with my sides feeling sore and uneven. My legs, like solid bricks, weighed me down to the moist ground. I had almost forgotten about the one thing I was happy about: breakfast. I scrambled to my feet and sprinted to the dining table, as my slave, Tyrone, served me half a dozen eggs with some milk and toast. Many people believe in the idea of low-calorie intake and separate meals, but for the next few meals I'm about to indulge myself into, I think that the amount of food I'm consuming is a heavy understatement. I stared at the well that was at least half a mile away. I took my wooden pails and trudged up the vast hills that blocked my winding path. It was noontime when the sweat on my body felt uneasy and engulfed my body. It was like I was drowning in myself, and I hated the sheer thought of that. I dropped to the floor, with my head flat on the ground. No more, I thought. Even the simplest of chores seemed almost impossible to accomplish, but the sheer idea of not having food on the table, or the cows not being fed gave me chills down my back. I picked myself up, and imagined the many smiles I could bring upon my mother, and what I could do for my family. It may have been a lot, but I'd do anything to continue making myself and my family proud. The cows, however, proved to be a difficult challenge. They continuously moved around and failed to stop doing so. I could barely harvest any of their succulent and sweet milk but was able to achieve the small and fair share of 4 pails. Next up was the house, and only once I started cleaning did I realize the many messes that constituted my living space. I grabbed a broom and sped as fast as I could, with sweat and perseverance running down my face and through my blood. It was 7 in the afternoon when I began to finish what I had started. Never in my life had I felt so accomplished and successful in doing the simplest of all tasks. It would be too bad that tomorrow I would have to repeat everything all over again.

I slowly go downstairs to see a delicious breakfast set on the kitchen table waiting to get eaten up. After stuffing myself, I grab a bucket and head to the well to receive some water. With the water, I take it back home where i pour some in a cup to drink out of. After consuming some water, I head over to my mom. she is my teacher and I enjoy learning from her. I love learning how to read and write. After my "school" is over, I ask my mom for food. She calls our slave to make some lunch for us. My lunch contained eggs, bacon, and rice. after finishing my lunch, I head over to work. My dad waits for me at his blacksmith shop. There, I polish silver and sweep his floors. In two hours, I head over to my friends house to play some trapball. Sometimes, we would make up some dance moves and perform them to the other kids in the neighborhood. Time goes by quickly and I am called in my mother for dinner. I go to bed after digesting all my dinner and....... goodnight!

I awake right before sunrise, and nothing but the eery silence surrounds me. The window brings in a cool breeze, but just as I am about to get out of bed the light blinds me from my window. I can feel the bags under my eyes, as if my entire face has been drained of its energy. As I get up and dressed, I pray as no one seems to be awake! It is Sunday morning once more, and just like every Sunday, I quick slip on my worn out shoes, and head to fetch some water. I return back home with 2 pails and luckily everyone is still sound asleep. I grab the cornmeal from our small kitchen and cook up a batch of porridge. Father, mother, and my two younger siblings are extremely grateful. After breakfast mother raises her voice as I did not make my bed, so I rush to do so. After that, mother teaches my siblings and I some math and a bit of reading. Luckily, I can spare some free time to visit my friends outside. By noon it is warm, and you can see other families passing by with bread in their baskets, pails of water, or simply taking a stroll. We play stick and hoop for hours it feels like. After lunch soon came dinner, my how has the time run out so quickly? The day was over before I knew it, and sadly Sunday is over, and tomorrow awaits- Monday.

My days are busy. They are filled with chores and schoolwork. Mother and Father decided to have me homeschooled so that I can be educated. I asked them why the slaves didn’t get schooling and they said it was because they were lesser than us. I don’t quite understand what that means, but I know that I don’t like schooling. My teacher fills my head with math equations and strange new words day after day. It’s tiring.
Besides my schooling, I also have many chores that I must complete daily. I have to make my bed and clean my room every morning, for Mother says that I will not be able to get a husband if I am untidy. I also go and fetch water from the well, which hurts my back and shoulders a lot. It’s an easier job than the slaves, though. They have to work in the hot sun day after day.
At the end of the day, I help Mother make dinner for Father and my brother. She won’t allow others in the kitchen after she claimed she saw a slave steal a piece of silverware, so now I must help her prepare dinner.

Today, I woke up early one bright, Saturday morning and slowly rolled of my bed. I stood up, and slowly made my way to the kitchen where breakfast was being made. My mother had woken up very early and made the family bread and butter. I quickly ate my breakfast and hurried out onto the field to help my father harvest crops. Today, I wasn't really going anywhere so I spent the day on the fields and in my spacious, one story house. By noon, my father and I had finished harvesting the crops and we went into the house for lunch. After lunch, my mother taught me basic math and English. When my lessons for the day was over, I helped my mother around the house by doing some chores. When it was evening, I still had a lot of time left, so I went outside to play my favorite game, hoop and stick for what felt like hours. Finally, I went back inside my house, ate my dinner which was bread, as always. Then I changed into my night clothes, got onto my bed, and went to sleep ready for the next day of activities.

I worked all day only pausing to eat a piece of bread and to drink water. I continued working until the sun went down & me and papa went home and ate the left over soup mama had made for the Wilsons. I went to sleep awaiting the work tomorrow.

Today is the day. I can finally start my apprenticeship of the Master craftsman. I wake up early in the morning and help out my uncle with his early farm work. I then get changed into my street clothes, and walk towards my master's shop. I hopped into the shop and greeted myself to the Master as I always do. I begin my work as he gives me a block of wood to carve. Along the way, he tells me useful tips on how to ensure that it comes out correctly. I eat lunch with the master and start work all over again. I work very hard until 5 and I leave from the shop. I arrive at my house and I eat supper with my family. then I go to sleep to start another day. Goodnight!

I wake up and rub my eyes open to focus. I make my way to the kitchen to help my mother with breakfast for the family. I after that went on to do my chores, scrubbing the floor, getting water from the well, making my bed, etc. When I was done with those tasks, I headed to the family room to learn from my parents and the limited, but helpful, education they gave me. When I would finish my small lesson for the day, finally I was free to play. I went to tend the garden which I really enjoyed doing. I also took care of my pet chicken, chicken. After I did that, I would play manacala with my older brothers, if they were done with there chores and lessons. If I were to be outside and saw my friends playing games such as hoop and stick, or trap ball. After what seems to have been a long, long day, the awaited night falls. I head home and help clean up the house. I eat dinner with my family, and head to my bed. I lay, and think about tomorrow, and then, I fall asleep.
