In my Media Report 2 I explained the effect that punk rock had on society and todays culture as well as the view of the genre as a whole. In my report I concluded that the genre as a whole was viewed as negative, not only due to the way the followers dress/act but just the music itself. Most of all the music in this genre contains very dark, almost disturbing messages ranging from death, to images of satan and to even suicide. This view lead directly into my conclusion that this genre of music really didn't have much of an effect on society as a whole because for the most part that type of music was completely outcast.

One of the genres I listen to the least is Classical Music. I've only ever listened to this type of music when forced to, by a class or some other outside reason, never for my own pleasure and never really enjoyed the music for myself. As far as the music's importance in today's society, I would say that Classical Music's prime importance would be as historical reference. There was a time period when Classical music would be considered "main stream" as it was what everyone listened to, primarily because it was the only form of music and also the first form of music. Although, times have changed and classical music has slowly been pushed to the side and forgotten. I personally believe it only serves as historical reference, and is truly only used in modern recreations of past traditions, such as Opera's and Theatre productions. Very few people attend symphonies and orchestras like they did centuries ago. As far as its overall influence, it just allows a window to the past, it has almost no affect on the future, as it has fallen out of the "mainstream" some time ago.

One example of this form of music is Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" or his "Ninth Symphony". This song personally stands out to me because I remember in several different classes throughout school being forced to analyze and even learn the song. Outside of educational purposes, I would have never probably came into contact with this song and never would of even known of its existence. Another classical song that serves as purely historical reference would be Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suites 1 and 2". I personally believe all classical music sounds very similar, sure different instruments are used, different tones, chords, melodies, tempos and all sorts of music elements are used to sound unique. Although personally the absence of all words makes it very hard for me to connect with the music. To me this song, one of the most popular classical music pieces of all time, just allows me to see into what life was like when this piece was written and to truly see the birth of music, before anyone thought of singing along to tune. This song although does have a more prominent effect than many other classical music pieces because I have heard it used in cinematography numerous times, and therefore has a more prominent effect on modern society then most.

After listening to several songs, I personally did not change my opinion on classical music serving as primarily a historical reference. I certainly do appreciate the music more than I did previously and it was a nice change from what I currently find appealing in music, but could still not see myself listening to it for personal pleasure. Furthermore, I do not see society listening to it for personal pleasure either, I feel as if the world of music has just moved on to bigger, better and more advanced things and therefore the art of classical music has somewhat been left in the past. With that being said, Classical music does play an integral part in the true appreciation of Music as it was such major part of it for so long and I would consider even the birth of all the music we know and love today.
