Perch are freshwater fish, found in lakes. Establishing a farm next to a coastal bay would mean extensive resources used for water supply in any type of aquaculture system used for perch (typically RAS). Recirculating aquaculture systems permit year-round culture of yellow perch and faster production cycles. However, RAS are expensive to construct and also require higher operational costs, redundant safeguard systems, and a fairly significant amount of training and/or learning time to efficiently operate. Thus, cages are used as perch have shown to perform well in cages, but grow-out also appears to take two to perhaps three years.

In many culture species, a lack of understanding of nutritional requirements has been a problem. Yellow perch have yet to be given a commercially available specialist diet, hence they are normally fed either trash fish or live feed in this type of system. This is inefficient in terms of production as a specialised diet would promote higher rates of growth and survival, but that is not possible as of now due to the lack of knowledge. Thus, rainbow trout feed is frequently administered as they share similarities and efficient survival rates have been recorded (feed conversion rates of 1.0–1.5 were registered and high survival rates were also obtained (>80%)).

Perch become sexually mature before they reach market size. Small perch spend energy on development of reproductive organs and spawning rather than on meat production. Thus, to counter this, research to develop both sterile fish and all-female production has been conducted.
