In my experience in early childhood, I believe loose parts is a big part of the childrens play and development, it enhances and encourages hand- eye coordination, gross motor skills, communication skills and resilience. Loose parts can be as simple as asking families to bring in food containers from their shopping, to be played with in the home corner or craft, we could set up an area outside with wooden blocks, pipes, pot plants, cable reels, cuts of turf, wood, tree cuttings, all these things children could make endless amounts of fun.

(Pacini-Ketchabaw et al., 2014)

I have never really been a big fan of clay, I always knew it was different to play dough, but could manipulate the same way as play dough, but during our Saturday lesson when playing with play dough, it was interesting to actually feel the difference in play dough and clay, as I had just played with play dough at work the day before.

Clay is very much a tough, hard type of experience, I actually really enjoyed playing with the clay, the texture is very different to play dough, and I am actually surprised it isn't played with more at childcare centres, I think it would be a lot more fun and interesting with them.

When I read this, I started thinking of ways this it true, so many pictures from my days at work come into mind. As much as children love resources, and things to play with, they also can make beautiful lasting memories out of anything, any loose part, clay, paper, or light, giving them the materials to experiment with, can lead to endless possibilities, with lasting memories.

(Pacini-Ketchabaw, Kind and Kocher, 2016)
