The Rhine River is home to many people in multiple of local cities and towns and has been for centuries. During early historic times, the Celts settled on its upper sides of the Rhine and Germanic tribes lived on either side of the lower Rhine. In 53 and 55 BC, Julius Caesar bridged and crossed the Rhine. The Roman empire was formed on the south and east and the Germania’s to the north. Around 400 AD the Western Roman Empire disintegrated, the Rhine was crossed along its entire length by Germanic tribes and formed the first central backbone of the Kingdom of the Franks and then of the Carolingian Empire which was a large empire in western and central Europe during the early middle ages. Now to modern times, a census from 2012 of the population in the basin region was estimated to be around 50 million people and along the entire river 106 million people. There are castles littered around the Rhine and make great tourist attractions, however, those castles where parts of the history of the River and housed many great people.

The Rhine River is economically valuable to many countries and towns that live along it and earns money in various ways. The Average per capita [GDP] of countries the Rhine flowed through is US$ 23 877. One of the ways the Rhine makes money is through the industry, some examples of the industry work are shipyards, refineries, chemical plants/industries, metal and car industries/producers, rubber industries, electrical industries, metal industries and food industries. Another way is their agriculture, one of the popular ways the Rhine in used for this is the vineyards in Germany.

The Rhine is currently quite polluted and is affecting the civilisation around it. The pollution in the Rhine River began during the 1850’s and problems and treatment to those problems continue currently. Agriculture is one of the biggest reasons the Rhine is affected due to fertilizer runoff also waste and chemical leaks from factories and industries that were released into the river have caused major problems. Making homes and towns (Urbanisation) is another issue and is causing water pollution rates to go down causing the Rhine to become something like an open sewer. One of the effects is the sudden decrease and extinction the fish population such as salmon in the Rhine. Another effect of these is the water quality, the water quality currently in the Rhine is not safe to drink because of metals, such as small pieces of copper and zinc and pesticides from plants flow into the water. Half a million fish have been killed and the death toll continues to increase. Many groups and associations were formed in order to get the species of fish back and are trying to help the water in the Rhine become drinkable again. Fish ladders were built to help fish travel through dams in countries such as Germany and France. Agreements have been made, like France reduce of chloride (a chemical) by 60%. The Rhine is slowly undoing the damage that was being made and fish species are coming back slowly.
